Nice place in the middle of nature

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Feb 2024
Very nice location to stay for some days. We slept in the small A-Frame Tent, but there are also private rooms and a backpackers lodge. The location is in the middle of nature, close to the Irente Viewpoint. We also did a tour to Kisasa Waterfalls and another tour to Magamba rainforest with the guide Joseph, who works at the lodge. Very nice experience!
Date of stay: February 2024
Room Tip: In the A-Frame Tent was no electricity and no light. Bring power banks and headlights.

We had a lovely time at Irente, the staff were very helpful and the food was great. We stayed in the backpackers rooms which is down the hill from the main house- its about 5 minutes walk. There are 5 rooms in the backpackers with a shared bathroom- the rooms are basic but comfortable enough, we were the only ones staying there so we had the whole house. For the prices dont expect top end luxury but a warm bed and hot shower and breakfast is included. We really enjoyed our time there and the kids expecially loved being able to milk the cows!

I stayed at Irente Farm for one night and had the picnic lunch, dinner and breakfast.

First the good: the food really is excellent. Everything is super fresh, the cheese is awesome, the 3-course dinner was lovely. The staff is really nice and helpful. The location is beautiful.

But I’d recommend coming for lunch and staying elsewhere. It seems the lodge has a couple really nice private rooms, and everything else is pretty grim. I booked a private room with a bathroom inside for $40. What I got was a superrr basic room with two single beds pushed together, a net that didn’t fit, and a bathroom down the hall. When I insisted that I’d paid for a private bathroom, I was told that this was a private bathroom because no one else was using it (even though it wasn’t inside the room). This would have been fine at the shared-bath price of 35k shillings, but what they charged for it was just insane. (To make matters worse, there was only one other family staying there - based on the descriptions of rooms on their website they absolutely could have put me in one of the nicer rooms. I’m pretty sure they gave me one of the rooms that normally costs 35k shillings and upcharged me because they were nearly empty.)

The place has an excellent potential to become the best in Lushoto: scenic views, lovely hospitality, a beautiful garden, irente view point 20 mins walking distance, and lovely homemade cheese and juice, and reasonable prices.
I think they should improve the food menu and make it more rich, and maybe produce 1-2 kinds of cheese, and maybe start baking their own bread.
These are my suggestions to the owners. But overall it's a lovely place.

A super homely stay, with such scenic views. We’d only planned on staying one night but couldn’t resist staying a second. Under new management, who are making plans and changes.

A lovely restaurant, filled with stunning furniture and decor.

The staff were so very friendly and went out of their way to help and advise us on our trip.

Food? WOW homemade fresh from the farm. Homemade rye bread and butter ❤️ Everything super yummy. Breakfast absolutely outstanding.
Thank you so much to Nick, Catherine and staff.

UPDATE:
Management has changed in the meantime and the new management immediately got in touch with us, reimbursed our costs and promised to take additional measure in the lodge - this, together with the very friendly staff and beautiful lodge (and location) after all, is a reason for us to give the lodge another chance and stay there again in the future.

Old review:
We stayed at Irente Farm beginning of April for a few nights. Despite the place being beautiful, food nice and staff friendly, we had an unfortunate incident of our room getting broken into and all our valuables stolen. This happened while we were at dinner in the main building. Security was nowhere to be seen and once they arrived, one was completely drunk. They said they heard nothing, despite the window and door being violently broken open. A police case was opened and the staff of the farm was helpful and seemed to be genuinely sorry. However, a month later I read another review here on tripadvisor about security acting suspicious and very poor response from the management upon confrontation. When I followed up with the lodge, it turned out they didn’t change security after our break-in or take any other measures, despite saying they take immediate action. Management (which is under the Lutheran church) is really poor and as long as things do not considerably change, I cannot recommend anyone staying there, as safety is a real concern.
