Simple but clean and comfortable

Review of Tumaini Hostel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Sept 2018via mobile
The staff is super helpful and the structure is simple but clean and comfortable. WiFi is also available, better in the garden. Definitely recommended the restaurant, small menu but great quality and super good price for lunch & dinners! Especially if you have the luck to meet the lovely Perpetua, she will teach you Swahili in a very sweet way!

Despite the hotel (bad) reviews, we decided to give it a chance and we did well! We asked to see the room first and checked the shower. We stayed 2nights at the Tumaini hotel, had hot shower everyday, could flush the toilet (absolutely no problem with the water) and the room was clean with TV and mosquito net over the bed (and not a grasshopper in sight!). We even had a small balcony where we enjoyed watching some weaver birds building their nest.
The breakfast is simple but largely enough (eggs, bread with butter and jam, tea, coffee, milk and orange).

Rooms are clean and beds are very comfortable. Hot shower ! Staff is ok. Breakfast is included, which is very nice for the price of the night. Good triple room (simple beds). Breakfast is not breathtaking though. Nice garden

The rooms and beds are decent, the hotel is centrally located in town, and it is a very cheap option. Despite all this I wouldn't come here again. We didn't have water for 2 days, and the staff didn't say anything about it. They didn't provide us with buckets with water, and when we asked about the water it would always be fixed in a few minutes. So we didn't shower for 2 days and couldn't flush the toilet. This might have been going on for a while, that would explain the grasshopper sanctuary that was our bathroom.
The laundry service promised us our laundry would be clean and dry the next day, but the next day we received our laundry back, soaking wet, with the comment that it was 'quite dry'. The excuse that it had rained didn't surprise us very much in a tropical rainforest during the rainy season.
You would say 'Oh this sounds like any cheap Tanzanian hotel'. The difference is that normally the staff would be so nice that you would forget about all this, but here they don't seem to care at all.

We (a group of 6: 4 students and 2 middle aged but adventurous semi-pensionado's from the Netherlands) arrived in Tumaini hostel after a long bus ride from Arusha to Lushoto. We entered the hostel through a big gate that led to a wonderful and cozy courtyard. Birds were singing, little girls ran around the building with flowers in their hair and so far we where not much disappointed with our hostel pick. After a week full of safari that ended at the most beautiful place on earth: Ngare Sero lodge at lake Natron, we entered the hostel with " the lowest expectations ever". It could only get worse after our previous camping experience at lake Natron so we were in a, to say, "forgiving mood". Nothing could really bother us. However from the moment we set one foot across the doorstep of this dungeon like accommodation the horror began and it didn't stop until..... well to be honest I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night bathing in sweat and begging god to make sure I never have to go back to Tumaini hostel again.
The room was ok, it was big and clean if you normally sleep in a dogs bench and we had to share it with some grasshoppers. This was not even a big problem for us, I love grasshoppers and there were only 12 of them... The worst part had just to come. After a lovely hike to Irente view lodge (which I can highly recommend, very tasteful lunch!) we came back to the hostel for our promised warm shower. Well ok they promised us a hot shower, but just warm would have been sufficient. Actually no water at all was granted to us. Hamna shida (no problem), because nobody needs to shower everyday. Although from that point on it became quite unpleasant that we had to defecate on top of our predecessors poo because the toilet wouldn't flush. The staff, a booking clerk and the concierge promised us the water would be fixed in 5 minutes. As by this point in the review you might expect, the next morning still no running water. Nevertheless there was one leaking faucet in the hotel that provided us with a bucket full cold but refreshing water, so still: hamna shida on our part. We went out for dinner and the staff assured us for the umpteenth time that the water supply was almost fixed. The next morning, surprise surprise, still no water plus our bathroom was smelling like a septic tank and the grasshoppers became more and more dominant, because after all we were the minority and should get out of the room, not them.
The only thing that got wet during our stay were the cloths we handed in for laundry service. And they were so wet, the concierge had to give them back in a bucket in order not to flood the whole hostel. Although he did this at a very convenient time (woke us up at 7 in the morning!!!) some apologies for handing in soaking wet clothes would have been nice. I believe the staff at Abu Ghraib prison is even more service minded than those working at Tumaini hostel.
All together I would highly recommend a stay in this hostel if a garbage dump like atmosphere is totally your thing.

Room tip: Turn around and go to Kumaini lodge.

There is a reason why the prices for this hostel are this low.
The location is great but the sanitary facilities and the staff were very poor.
We just came in after a big hike in the rain to discover there was no water in the shower. After asking for it they told us to fix it but this didn't happen. Without knocking the staff came in or room but still no water, without any apologie we needed to change room.

      breakfast was very basic.

There was a lot of noise during the night, not really sound proof...

So if you need a really budget place to stay, this is it, but I advise you not for more than one day...
