While touring New Zealand by car, we heard about the Tarata Fishaway Lodge and decided to see if they could fit us in for a last minute booking. We were in luck, and had a wonderful experience. Bob had a totally enjoyable day with Stephen floating and flyfishing on the river, and Beth relaxed in the treehouse, walked by the river, and caught up on some reading. It was an adventure to get there - but the road is clearly marked. The location is stunning, and the family is friendly and helpful. We would love to come back for a longer stay.

Kanuka is something special. The house is immaculately presented but homely and comfortable. Trudy's luxurious touch of fresh flowers throughout the house made us feel special. The view is amazing, especially sitting in the private clifftop spa, and from the spacious deck. It is an easy walk down to the river from the house. Trudy was a great host, calling to check that we had everything we needed. Our only regret was not to have booked a river trip with them.

We were lucky to be the first paying guests to stay at the brand new Tarata fishaway accommodation called 'Kanuka'
Kanuka is situated about 10 mins out of Taihape and about 30 minutes away from Tarata lodge itself. It is a brand new 3 bedroom/ 3 bathroom luxury home high on a hill overlooking the Rangitiki River. It is nothing short of superb. The house itself is an entertainers dream with large spacious areas inside and an amazing roofed outdoor deck with outdoor furniture and BBQ.
The quality finishing and layout of the house shows the love that was put in to the design to make the most of the surrounding view. The spa is literally right on the edge of the cliff making it feel like you are part of the Rangitiki gorge itself.
Trudi's hosting style was 2nd to none. The pantry, cupboards and fridge were stocked with handy items including a bowl of fresh fruit to match the fresh flowers scattered around the house. Quality towels, linen and very comfortable beds added to the experience.
A day on the river fishing with Stephen and rafting with Steph was a fantastic way to take in the sights and enjoy what this area has to offer.
If you want a piece of luxury in the middle of nowhere with postcard views then Kanuka is the place for you.
If you want friendly hosts who make you feel like family then Stephen & Trudi and their girls are who you are looking for.
Thanks guys, we were honoured to be your first paying guests at Kanuka...what a treat!

Loved the photo of all of you in the raft. What a gorgeous day. Thank you so much for taking such good care of Kanuka and leaving it so perfect. Have a wonderful Christmas and hope to see you back in 2019.

We stayed for 3 nights at the River Retreat to celebrate my wife Gill's birthday. We were welcomed by Mikayla who explained all that we needed to know about how to operate things (including the spa pool) and who ensured throughout our stay that we had everything we needed. The place was warm, very comfortable, well equipped and immaculately clean. Tarata is definitely off the beaten track with the last few kilometres on winding gravel road. If you are a first timer on gravel it's probably best not to do it in the dark. For me it brought back memories of how lots of New Zealand roads used to be! The views from the River Retreat are stunning and the whole place is beautiful and very serene. We didn't do much this trip except relax and chill out. We did our own catering but you can also have meals prepared for you if you don't feel like cooking. Lot's to do on and around the river or just sit back and relax. We're about to book our return in the new year!

This was a fantastic weekend away I had in the dog friendly unit with my mate Kairo ( Border Collie )
This is a separate unit especially for dog owners to bring their beloved companions with them on holiday at is a great idea and I wish more places would do it.
Kairo loved meeting all the baby animals and on our first day we even got a guided tour down to the river by Ruby their friendly golden lab with a bonus friend on the way back up when Snoopy the pet deer joined us.
Evenings in the spa with the fantastic views was a must at the end of everyday.
The 14km rafting trip on our last day was the icing on the cake. Kairo was also welcome as they fitted him with his own lifejacket to enjoy the gentle cruise with a stop on the way to see the hidden waterfall.
At the end of the rafting trip we were greeted with a bbq and a relaxing time out with great company. Nothing was to much trouble as our ute was even waiting at the top of the hill for us.
This whole thing is something everyone should experience at least once in their life.
We are already planning our next trip back.

Thankyou Gary and Kairo for writing a review. We loved having you both. Kairo was so well behaved and a natural on the raft.
You were too LOL. It was such a lovely day on the river, a perfect way to spend a sunny day.
The Tarata animals were very happy to have another 4 legged friend too. We look forward to having you back next year.
