Wow, we are kiwi's ourselves so to find yet another hidden piece of paradise in our own country is wonderful!
We were gifted two nights in the River Retreat as a wedding present and had a wonderful time. Brylee was so welcoming and easy to get on with, nothing was a problem! Steph took us on our scenic rafting tour and was a breeze to spend the day with. The rafting was very relaxing and we struck a gorgeous day. The accomodation was so homely and had everything we could have needed. Is so lovely as got the full sun until about 6.30pm, very relaxing sitting on deck watching the river with a wine (or 2 or 3....) then after dinner relaxing in the spa before climbing into the most comfortable bed! The meals were wonderful, great delivery service on the quad bike - wish I'd got a photo!
Would highly recommend this to anyone else. In fact my husband wants to come back with his son and book out the cabin and take him fishing so hopefully we'll be back! Good luck with the new lodge, what a spot!

Room Tip: We stayed in the River Retreat as a couple, is very secluded with stunning views and very spacious.

We are so happy you enjoyed your Wedding present, didn't your Mum do well. "Meals on wheels in gumboots" is the usual thing.LOL
So glad you enjoyed your dinner and the spa. I am lucky to have such wonderful staff ! They are the best.
A day rafting on the river is the best way to beat this summer heat so glad you had an awesome day.
Thank you for your review and we look forward to your return for some more adventure, and maybe a stay in the new Lodge.

This gem is certainly off the beaten track, that is the charm of the place. No cell signal. WiFi for that urgent email is available at the main house, but put away your electronic devices for a stay of at least several days. This is the finest lodge operation we have visited in 40 years of traveling together.

Steven and Trudi run this Lodge with their three daughters. Perched on the rim of the Rangatiki gorge, the views of the river from the deck of the River Retreat and the Treehouse cabins are awesome. The river flows some 150 meters below you, but you can hear the murmur of the rapids to lull you to sleep with the calls of the moreporks (owls) in the nearby trees.

Fishing was excellent...although catching the rainbows and occasional brown trout is dependent on many factors, we experienced plenty of action and were awed by the size and power of some of these fish. If the weather is right, a helicopter excursion to a remote headwater may give you the opportunity to cast to some seriously large fish. The “departure lounge” is three folding chairs at the edge of a sheep paddock. What could be better.

While staying in the River Retreat(our 40th anniversary), we were given a basket of breakfast goodies to enjoy each morning with the option of a hot breakfast at the main lodge each day. Dinner was served in the main lodge...this gives a chance to interact wi5 other guests and share stories of your day. On the nights that we were the only guests, our dinner was brought to our cabin for us to enjoy overlooking the gorge...complete with freshly cut roses for the table.

These are people who care about their guests. Always safe on the river, skilled in teaching nuances of NZ fly fishing, great food, personal service, this Lodge offers the best of everything.

After pulling off the mostly empty highway onto the totally empty access road and continuing to drive a number of kilometers, I thought our travel agent had lost her mind. Why had she sent us so far off the not-even beaten path to a fishing camp when I had asked for charm and character? Exactly!

Tarata Fishaway is so much more than the sum of its parts. Combining a stunning, almost-untouched physical setting with a warm, caring and engaging family, it is the perfect example of what all B and B’s or homestays should aspire to be. Our problem was that we were only booked for one night, which did not allow us to partake of most of the available adventures.

The food is very good, so definitely opt for the on-site dinner rather than going into town. Stephen will regale you with his stories about growing up in NZ. Also, I would not like to face the drive back from town after dark.

No, our travel agent had really not lost her mind – but rather helped us find a very special spot. Stephen, Trudy and their family have created a small patch of wilderness/farm/fishing camp/retreat that somehow makes you feel good about life by just being there. We miss it.

A special thanks goes to Mikayla, who gave us a tour of the farm and drove us down into the gorge to the riverbank. You’re a delightful young woman.

What can I say, this place is all you ever want, for a couple or a large group. I had my 60th birthday with family here, stayed in both the Tree House and River Retreat. Trudi, Steve and family made it so special for everyone. Sharing their beautiful puppies, cooking an amazing meal with added fun and surprises, taking the kids on the magic carpet ride in the paddock, which was their highlight!. Spas were also great.
Everything is spotless, with added personal touches of fresh flowers in rooms.
Nothing was too much trouble, thank you Trudi, Steve and family for a memorable time.
Merry Xmas x

We had a wonderful time at Tarata Fishaway Lodge, it was the most beautiful setting and we so much enjoyed being able to share the experience with our pooch. So many things to do on the property, even pup got to come white water rafting! Thank you to the Matlocks for sharing this very special location.

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review. We love being able to take the dogs on the scenic rafting. They really enjoy it and the dog friendly unit is great because it gives them their own space.Look forward to you coming back.
