“Top fly fishing, scenery, excellent guiding fantastic value food and accommodation”
Reviewed 18 December 2015

For fantastic fly fishing with a superb guide and remarkable scenery in a remote location this is absolutely world class. In 50 years of fly fishing in some of worlds best places this is hard to beat. Excellent accommodation and scenic rafting for non fisher companion. Hot tub with a glass of wine and mind boggling scenery at end of day.

Peter Wilson

Room Tip: Tree house is excellent, spar and wine and view.

We came here as a group of Aussie fly fishers on the recommendation of one of our club members and the experience of the rafting trip far exceeded our expectations. From the outset we were warmly and enthusiastically greeted by Steve and after Trudi arranged out licences we boarded the raft. Steve certainly knows and values this world class trout fishery on the Rangitikei River. He regularly stopped the raft and ensured each individual was given the opportunity to hook trophy fish. His patience and tuition saw each of us rewarded with photos of outstanding fish - both rainbows and browns. He was genuinely pleased to see each of us hook the fish and ensured that we carefully handled its return for the next angler - as we practice "catch & release". The scenic value of this unique piece of water exclusively accessible by rafters was only exceeded by the unforgettable fishing. All agreed that this day was the highlight of our week in the Taupo area. Sincere thanks for the great day - we will return!

My husband and I recently spent a weekend at Tarata with our son and his partner. The whole experience was great right from the get go. Trudy and Steve were amazing hosts and the treehouse accommodation was perfect. The fridge was stocked with breakfast supplies from juice through to yoghurt, cereals and fresh fruit, all at no extra cost. If you are wanting to see some of NZ's most scenic country then I recommend doing a scenic raft ride with Steve. He is a real character and had us laughing for 3 hours relaying stories about life on the river. His knowledge of the area is amazing and it is clear that he loves what he does. The men had a great afternoon trout fishing and Steve knew exactly where the trout hung out. The place is incredible and there is nothing that this couple wont do to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Its a real winner!

Room Tip: The treehouse offers amazing views

This one of those hidden gems in the North Island if New Zealand. Stunning scenery from a cosy retreat with a lot of detail and care put in it (turntable with a lot if oldies rock classics included!!) The experience of enjoying the private hot tub outdoors in the middle of the nature was quite unique. Very friendly owners as well. Worths the money and the time to reach it.
