We had been staying in the French Alps, in extremely cold overnight weather, when our German friends invited us to travel 150 miles to stay at the Leon D'Oro secolare in Canale d'Alba. We jumped at the chance to enjoy the wonderful food served there.
The restaurant is tucked away in the town's arcade but what a gem it is! Service is excellent, provided by the owner, Alaria, and her staff! Wines are carefully selected by Alaria, often unique to the venue. Italian whites (Arneis and Dolcetto) are sublime and a total change from our normal red selection.
The food which we shared, just went on and on..a selection of local dishes, all beautifully produced! The roast ham was succulent, the noodles with sausage ragout brilliant, the homemade ravioli super, the guinea fowl fantastic, the Romero Arneis style rabbit fantastic and the veal with blue cheese sauce tremendous. The desserts were great, too , enjoyed with some excellent Birbet sparkling wine. If you like Grappa, they have a good selection.
We have talked with our friends at home just yearning to return and this visit lived up to our past visit! We will return but, truly, hope that others take their time to search out this little gem.
It is a good idea to book in at the hotel, which is a little dated, but still fine. The area is superb for visiting the tremendous wine producers in the area.

Illaria is a most wonderfull host, the waiter (Luciano) is the kind of a waiter you want to have in every restaurant you go with a little child.
The served dishes were delicious, the 'carne' was splendid.
We will be back in the area and we will be eating at this place again.
Thank you for those 2 wonderfull diners ! Josefien & Parents :-)

Very nice atmosphere and the staff are so outward going and friendly. Friendly and talkative piano player all though everything is packed into an episode of Fawlty Towers :) positively meant.
Food though is another chapter. Quite under par which has nothing to do with the staff but maybe a change in the kitchen has happened. Honestly the pasta was boring and less tasteful. Even a classic Vitello was so far from the original that I couldn't eat the portion. Sauce was a fish sauce with anchovies and no taste of tuna. Meat was not well prepared and sliced veal but was a pure carpaccio meat. That was a shame. Hoping for better occasions at this restaurant.

We enjoyed lunch in the dining room with good quality china, attentive staff and tasty food. Excellent value. Recommend the risotto and the cheese platter.
