We stayed here as a family of four for a week at the beginning of August. The children (11 and 14 years) gasped as they viewed their luxuriously appointed twin room and we all gasped when we saw the view from the first floor sitting-room out over Ullswater. The Duke's Retreat has neighbours on either side but we suffered no disturbance and exchanged a friendly 'hello' with anyone we met. The children enjoyed running around and a bit of cricket on the spacious lawn area in front of the house whilst the adults enjoyed sitting on THAT balcony with THAT view. Surprisingly, we did manage to drag ourselves away to do some exploring and walking over the course of the week. The house is very well positioned for many activities and there are walks to suit every level of fitness as well as plenty of hotels, pubs and restaurants in which to dine. If eating in is more your thing then nearby Penrith has Booths, Sainsbury's and Morrison's supermarkets as well as Cranstons (butcher and farm shop). The Duke's Retreat is certainly equipped with everything required to prepare a good meal and the pre-stocked wine cooler in the kitchen with honesty payment is an inspired idea! Could not fault anything about the house: very clean and comfortable and beautifully furnished and decorated. The owners have done a brilliant job. They also own a café and gift shop in the village of Pooley Bridge that is well worth a visit after a morning's walk. A highlight of the holiday for us was breakfast on the balcony on our last morning - it was so warm and sunny that we almost believed we were abroad but no, THAT view could only be in The Lake District.
