“Lovely house in lovely surroundings”
Reviewed 24 January 2016 for a stay in July 2014

We stayed here for a week in July 2014 and the only reason I didn't write a review earlier was because the new owners hadn't started to advertise it at that point, so it wasn't featured on TA then. We approached them directly through a mutual friend so I think we were their first paying guests! We returned to Duras very recently to look for a house of our own to buy. When hunting for a few nights' B&B on TA I stumbled across Les Merleaux again, so I decided to leave a long overdue review.

This is a stunning old stone farmhouse. It is huge and full of French character with beautiful old windows and shutters and lovely weathered terracotta floors. If, like me, you are a big fan of old, rustic French houses you will get your fix from this one. The kitchen is lovely to work in, nice and spacious and it opens onto a terrace that gets some shade at various times of the day so it's perfect for eating outside when it's very hot. There are also two other terraced areas at the rear of the house by the pool so you can eat wherever you fancy depending on the time of day and where the sun is.

The pool is a really good size, very private and sheltered but gets plenty of sun. There is plenty of space in the garden for children to play safely, but not so much land that you will lose them - they will still hear you call for dinner!

The surrounding countryside is very pretty and gently hilly, so great for long (but not too exhausting) walks where you might get to see some wildlife, especially birds of prey. The area is full of vineyards, plum orchards and fields of sunflowers.

It's a short drive into Duras which is a small but quite lively Bastide town with lots of laid-back atmosphere coming from a handful of restaurants, bars and cafes on summer evenings, and a nice little market. There is a surprisingly good and well-stocked little supermarket maybe two or three kilometres down the road from the house, and a huge E LeClerc hypermarket a bit further away towards Sainte Foy Le Grande.

The area is peaceful and quiet but well placed for day trips further into the Dordogne, or to Bergerac, St. Emilion and Bordeaux.

We won't be returning, but only because we liked it so much we just bought a house nearby!

“Beautiful spacious restored French farmhouse”
Reviewed 28 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had a fantastic holiday at this lovely location. The pictures really don't do this property justice. Full of character and charm with all the expected amenities , everything you could possibly want . For extended families or friends plenty of room to have your own space as well as great communal areas such as the swimming pool , fire pit bbq area, extensive garden and well appointed kitchen. Weather was great so we explored the surrounding areas visited night markets , fetes , walking routes . Plenty to do with a mixed group of ages. Internet connection was brilliant and entertained 8 children while us adults could relax and unwind in comfort. We would definitely visit again and highly recommend .

“Beautiful house in a beautiful place.”

A group of ten of us stayed in this house for five days, and it wasn't long enough! Les Merleaux is a wonderful house, large enough to comfortably accommodate all of us in the kitchen and dining room every night, as well as around the fire pit outside. The house is filled with everything you could need.

We spent a lot of time relaxing in and beside the pool, which is of a generous size. The weather was beautiful during our stay, and the seats around the pool are the perfect place to enjoy the sunshine from.

We really enjoyed visiting Duras' markets and local vineyards, and Les Merleaux was the perfect place to stay. I would love to come back some day.

Thank you for your review, we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Les Merleaux, it is fabulous to hear that you and all your guests enjoyed the amenities at the house and had an enjoyable time visiting the local area.
We appreciate your comments about the pool alarm - this is to stay in line with the French laws regarding pool safety, so we hope you understand that occasionally something as small as a leaf going into the pool can set the alarm off. We hope that it did not distract from your enjoyment of the property.
We look forward to welcoming you and your group again to Les Merleaux in the future.

“An authentic taste of rural living in Acquitane”
Reviewed 29 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

This is the second year that I have taken my family and joined friends in this lovely part of France. Les Merleaux provides the perfect combination of rural and authentic living spaces in a location convenient to take advantage of the various fairs, night markets and festivals in Duras, Levignac and Monsegur to name but three!
The hardest choice we had to make was whether we barbecued by the pool, ate Al Fresco fresh French produce in the walled garden or headed out for a taste of the local produce on offer in the surrounding towns.
The children (5 to 9 of them at various times) either played in the huge garden, splashed around in the pool or not to look for 'dinosaurs' in the surrounding forests and vines.
Feel the stress bleed off as soon as you turn the corner into this taste of paradise hidden away in the tiny hamlet of Merleaux!
