Our rental car served us well on this sightseeing trip. It is a steep climb up to Mante Sant'Angelo with many switchbacks. There are rocks walls and terracing all along the way, some of them so precarious, one wonders about the hearty souls who set those stones so many hundreds of years ago. Parking is easy on a center lot. We were there early, and by the time we left, the lot was quickly filling with tour buses. There are many panhandlers on the street, including men who waved us into our parking space then wanted a tip for watching our car. We walked up the ancient streets to the castle on the most prominent spot in town. It was built in the 9th century and is in amazingly good condition. The views from the castle are stunning, and the Gargano Penninsula on a whole, is a pleasant surprise in its beauty. We were told the Gargano is where Italians go on holiday, away from the touristy areas in the north and west. The castle was definitely worth the trouble.
