Our rental car served us well on this sightseeing trip. It is a steep climb up to Mante Sant'Angelo with many switchbacks. There are rocks walls and terracing all along the way, some of them so precarious, one wonders about the hearty souls who set those stones so many hundreds of years ago. Parking is easy on a center lot. We were there early, and by the time we left, the lot was quickly filling with tour buses. There are many panhandlers on the street, including men who waved us into our parking space then wanted a tip for watching our car. We walked up the ancient streets to the castle on the most prominent spot in town. It was built in the 9th century and is in amazingly good condition. The views from the castle are stunning, and the Gargano Penninsula on a whole, is a pleasant surprise in its beauty. We were told the Gargano is where Italians go on holiday, away from the touristy areas in the north and west. The castle was definitely worth the trouble.

The view is just amazing. I would recommend a visit in the evening to see the sun go down.
You'll learn about the historic background of the castle going back to the 12th century. Right next door you'll learn about archangel st. Michael and you also have a great view over the entire city.

Not much of a castle, but worth it for the views over the countryside and towards the coast. One or two interesting rooms and some very low ceiling passageways, but not much else.

The town is well worth a visit.

The views are spectacular!

As are the winding streets and vistas of the older parts of the town.

The castle / fort must be one of the most spectacular in Europe... well worth a visit .

The usual tourist traps abound... especially in the approach to the Crypt...

The Crypt itself is somewhat of a mystery for the none believer...and not for those who dislike crowds or are claustrophobic... there are many steps down and out again...

We visited this marvelous Norman fortress late in the day, so we saw it at dusk and under lights. It is a wonderful site - and it amazed us how they could build such a structure in this location, given the amount of rock it took to do so. It is in remarkably good condition for something so old.
