I stayed here for 2 nights at the back end of May and having read some poor reviews was a little concerned particularly regarding the food quality. However, we had a nice room above the indoor pool and were quite satisfied with accommodation provided. Our first night’s dining experience was excellent. Firstly, the staff are all so genuinely helpful and friendly but the moules and frites were delicious as was the cheeseboard to follow. We had booked a table in a local pub for the second evening but cancelled after our dinner the night before.

Breakfast was good and once again the staff were excellent. In a particularly busy meal service I was offered a Danish pastry, I enquired if there were any raisin ones and the guy left to go to the kitchen to find one. Warmed nicely too.

Bearing in Mind this was the first weekend properly open due to Covid, the whole visit was thoroughly enjoyable and can well recommend staying here. Also the ribeye steak on our second evening was delicious. Congratulations to the management and super staff.

Drinks were grossly overpriced. Was never told the prices till it came to paying the bill then found out it was £13 for a drink! The drink wasn’t even fully made with plenty room in the glass to at least fill it to the standard amount!! Do not recommend whatsoever, worst management I’ve witnessed.

Room tip: Everything else was nice. But drinks tipped me over

We stayed for two nights for our silver wedding anniversary (we were due to go to Fiji so anything in the UK had a lot to live up to). We were in room 4 in the Manor House and it was fantastic, really light and airy whilst retaining old world charm. The hotel felt COVID safe with everyone observing protocols. The service in the hotel was slow but friendly whilst the menu was simply a guide to what you could have won - there were more items on the menu that were unavailable than those that could be ordered. We were very disappointed, particularly as this was such a special occasion. We spoke to Steve, the manager, and we were offered a variety of options to resolve our issues, we felt that our concerns were taken seriously and acted upon without any rancour. Izzy in the restaurant was fantastic and she never stopped smiling although under great pressure. The hotel is clearly understaffed but Steve and his team are doing their very best, the least those of us lucky enough to be on holiday can do is to give them some leeway and understanding. After the first night we would probably never have returned to this hotel but Steve’s proactive attitude and high level of integrity have ensured that we will look forward to returning at he earliest opportunity.

Room tip: Book a room in the manor house

Had a Virgin Experience present for a spa day for 2 with lunch and treatments. This was a present for a special birthday last May and I was really pleased to be able to finally use this. Due to the current COVID restrictions I had to book an hour slot for the pool which I did for 1100 am. We arrived at 1040 to be told our session had been put back to 1130. We went for a coffee while we waited. The bar/cafe opened at 11 so we thought plenty of time for this. How wrong we were. Finally got coffee at 1130 and had to rush this to get back for our pool session.
The pool session was very disappointing. No jacuzzi and the sauna and steam room were not open until 21 June although signs on the door indicated they were open. We left our pool session early as the pool did not hold much appeal on its own. We thought we would have a leisurely lunch before our booked treatments at 1400. It was a good job we did.
Lunch was like a comedy farce. Not many customers but it took ages to get served and everything anyone ordered around us was not available. Our experience day included a glass of Prosecco each, but apparently no chilled Prosecco available. We were offered an alternative but really! We only just managed to finish lunch before dashing for our treatments (which were really excellent and the saving grace of the day).
Staff on duty were average and seemed very confused about everything. Tables not cleared as they went by with empty trays so no organisation at all
Given this was a special birthday present it was very disappointing and not what I would expect

Our stay here was marred by poor service, indifferent staff, and general lack of any sort of organisation whatsoever.

Dinner service was extremely poor. We waited for a long time before even being shown to a table - there seemed to be no staff in sight. Once seated it was another wait to place our order. Food arrived 50 minutes later. Unacceptable. We gave up on ordering a dessert because there were no staff in sight to take our order. Tables were left uncleared, it was messy and disorganised.

We used the pool and again there were no staff on hand, we waited for a long time before a staff member turned up. Nothing was explained to us, the sauna and steam room were not working. In our room there was no shower curtain, and the tv remote worked only intermittently. We had a knock on the door early in the morning from the housekeeping staff wanting to clean the room, even though checkout wasn't until 11am. Breakfast service was a disorganised farce, there were very few staff in sight. Once again we had to wait before a staff member arrived and seated us, then we waited a long time to be served coffee, after having to find someone to help. There was a lack of plates, glasses, and food. Milk had run out, and there was no juice. We had a hot breakfast which was served from the canteen style servery. It was ok, but nothing special. You had to ask for pastries, they weren't available to choose for yourself. The only staff member who seemed to have any wits about them was a young lad called Kelvin - he should be congratulated on his work ethic and attitude. Breakfast service was chaotic and uncomfortable and left a lot to be desired.

When we complained about the poor service throughout our stay as we checked out, the reception staff member just said 'oh other people have said that too'. Unbelievable.

We will be writing a letter of complaint. A really disappointing stay.

Room tip: The hotel is massive and it's like a maze finding your room.
