“Perfect secluded Costa Rican oasis in the jungle”
Reviewed 19 April 2017 for a stay in April 2017

We loved our 3-night stay in this colorful and charming Costa Rican house in El Castillo! Our family of four enjoyed lounging in the hammock on the porch outside while listening and watching howler monkeys in the foreground of beautiful Arenal Volcano.

Nita and her husband, the owners, live next door to their rental (but there is plenty of privacy) and the kids loved playing with Dobby their dog and two cats. Nita was extremely helpful helping us book activities before and during our stay and was available to answer questions about the house. She has the rental beautifully decorated with plenty of lounge space both indoors and outdoors. She gave very detailed directions to get there and we didn't get lost once. Like most Costa Rican roads, their driveway is a bit steep at some points, so I would recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle and an adventurous spirit.

The beds were comfortable and there were plenty of linens and a huge shower. They also equipped the home with plenty of board games, toys, and movies to keep the kids busy. While the house is in the hot and humid rainforest, it has plenty of windows providing beautiful views as well as airflow to keep things cool and comfortable.

We bought groceries and used their bbq and well-equipped kitchen two of the three nights we stayed there. One night we ate in La Fortuna after a day of activities there and let's just say we were all ready to leave the over-crowded tourist trap and get back to our little oasis in El Castillo, an easy 45-minute drive away.

While the home is not in the main tourist area, it is only an 11-minute drive from SKY Adventures, where we walked hanging bridges and went zip-lining. I highly recommend it! It's also very close to the Arenal Park entrance and the El Castillo Butterfly Conservatory. El Castillo itself is a tiny village with a little market and a few sodas. We had the BEST homemade ice cream just outside of El Castillo at Pizza Johns. If you stay here you have to visit.

I would highly recommend staying here, and would rent it 100 times over! You won't regret it.

“Relaxing Retreat! Central for activities, yet remote enough for beauty, views, and rest”
Reviewed 21 September 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We LOVED this relaxing little cottage, and only wished that we had planned more than a 3 night stay! Although the drive to the cottage was adventurous, it was certainly not in any way dangerous or difficult. The views were impressive, and we were so thankful for the amenities that allowed us to cook tasty meals and save money in the process. The home was well cared for, clean, and had a creative flair which we enjoyed! Although we took in several activities each day during our stay in El Castillo, we always looked forward to coming "home"! We were also thankful for the security system at this cottage because there were times when we simply didn't wish to carry all of our expensive photography gear, and we always felt safe leaving it here.

From the moment that we arrived at the Encantada Guest House until the moment that we left, we felt that Nita would provide any of the information or assistance that we needed. She even washed our clothes for us and had them folded upon our return.

Our son slept on the air mattress that Nita provided, and he was thankful for how extremely comfortable it was - even for his 6 foot tall frame. With this mattress, all 6 of us were able to comfortably stay at the home together!

Do NOT miss out on an opportunity to stay at this delightful cottage!!

P.S. While you are in El Castillo, make certain that you visit Victor at the Arenal Eco Zoo! He was extremely informed about the snakes, frogs, turtles, birds, and crocodiles in the area. He even helped us to capture some stunning pictures of the red-eyed tree frogs.

“Fabulous birding and unique private location”
Reviewed 31 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at Hacienda Encantada with our family of 6 (children 11, 13, 13 and 17). Birding was absolutely fabulous from the garden and nearby, and also in the town of El Castillo. We saw 46 birds we had not seen before. Be aware that the road to El Castillo and the whole town is dirt road. Moreover, the road to the house is very steep and rocky (we got stuck once when someone was coming the other way--they kindly helped us get our car out of the mud). DO NOT try to rent here without having a 4 wheel drive vehicle and we would advise not trying to make it to El Castillo right from the SJO airport. We arrived at 11 a.m. local time but renting the car took some time and the drive was also much longer than we expected (Google maps estimated 3-4 hours but it took us 6-7). There are very narrow and twisting roads and it is easy to get stuck behind a slow vehicle. It gets dark in Costa Rica every day at about 6:00 and it is hard to get to the house in the dark.
The house is absolutely lovely and the kitchen supplies were very well stocked. Our family of 6 was comfortable and enjoyed watching several of the classic movies that are provided, playing card games (several games were available) and playing with the cats and dog that hung around the place. The caretaker, Juan, was very kind and helpful. We did have the hot water go out and the internet was in and out because of the storms. It was a good experience for our children to learn about living in the country. Staying in this house lets you meet some of the local people. We went horseback riding with Lilander on the most amazing horseback riding trip I had ever been on. We highly recommend letting the owner book this tour for you. Lilander takes you on his family's private rainforest land with his own Appaloosa horses. He controls all of the group of horses by voice. They are very gentle and obedient and even my husband, who was very afraid to ride, had a fabulous time. Ask him to tell you the story of his family and how he started his business and you will get a chance to enjoy meeting a local person and understanding the community. My family also enjoyed the Sky Trek, Tram and Zipline, Sky Kayak Trip, as well as the Desfario water rafting trip. Both companies had terrific guides that made it fun for my kids as well as lots of safety precautions. One other special event for us was seeing a local band competition at the farmer's market in downtown Fortuna. You will have a wonderful time in El Castillo if you stay at Hacienda Encantada.

Thanks so much for your kind words. I have no Idea why the trip from SJO to the house took so long.. we always do it in less than 4 hours even with a potty stop in San Ramon. Our rural road often suffers at the whim of Mother Nature and although we continue to improve it with sets of concrete strips, it is an uphill battle literally!. So I agree that a 4x4 vehicle is a very wise choice. That being said, the road is passable in a regular car, as well, but will be a bumpy ride.
Visiting a developing nation does indeed make those of us from more advanced nations, appreciative of the many instant conveniences that we take for granted on a daily basis. Small outages do happen from time to time, but they serve to give us perspective and a chance to reconnect with Nature and Family. Pura Vida!
