Food was amazing! If you’re up to trying something different in Japan- go here! If you’re also craving fresh sashimi- go here also!

Foods to definitely try when you go:
-Tuna spare ribs
-Sashimi selection
-Cod soft roe au Gorgonzola gratin(very creamy)
-Shrimp and fresh corn tempura
-Rice in cold broth topped with salmon caviar, ochazuke style
- Sakura cherry blossom gelato with milk

I went here beginning of November with some friends and family. It is a bit away from the hustle and bustle that you would normally expect from being in Shibuya but the area is very quaint.

The staff spoke English very well and we had no difficulties in ordering what we wanted.

One of the unique things that Kaikaya has done is to separate the non smoking and smoking seatings in 2 different entrances and rooms. Usually when I dine in Japan, I would usually get trapped in all the second hand smoking. However, Kaikaya’s concept was very nice- both smokers and non smokers can enjoy their dinner.

The seating can be a little cramped for bigger parties so I suggest booking early. It does get crowded later in the evening so I would suggest making reservations around 6:30pm for the best experience. You get 2 hours to dine and order whatever you want. The staff will give you a heads up when you have 30 mins left of the dining service to order. Please keep in mind that this place is small so they try to impose a 2 hr. seating limit once you start ordering- I found that to be plenty of time to order so no worries.

NOT A SHOCKED AMERICAN EATING FRESH FISH but no joke the best sashimi I’ve ever had. They don’t have “sushi rolls” but even the chicken was excellent. It is extremely casual and accommodating. Great vibes. A plus. It was surprisingly cheap also.. $110 usd for 4 people and we ordered 6 dishes.

Totally screwed up my mum's birthday celebration and also my wedding anniversary with my wife! We went in a family and they tried to dictate our orders instead of giving us the freedom to choose the set menu that we wanted.

Ordered 6 sets of the 10-dish menu as dictated by them but were certainly served less than that. Instead of serving 6 tuna spare ribs, they only served 4. Another instance where 6 prawns were served in one plate of side dishes instead of serving 6 plates of prawns with respective side dishes and we only had 2 steamed fish instead of 6 while our neighbour got 1 steamed fish to share between the two of them. The couple next table ordered 2 sets and they got two tuna spare ribs as well. They were amused with what we got served.

Certainly conned. Never mind about the note at the bottom of their menu which says they serve by plate sharing. It is certainly not the way to serve when you charge a premium price over small servings. You cannot charge what you do not serve!

We even had a mussel where they probably accidentally left a short piece of metal scrub in it.

They were also quite slow and forgetful in refilling water and tea for us even though we requested a couple of times politely.

Probably the worst Japanese restaurant we have been to after a couple of trips down the years. Extremely disappointed where the boss himself was there that night but did not personally step in to offer us an explanation. Instead he ordered the whole kitchen staff out to offer us apologies and explanation.

Really great chance to try seafood dishes in various forms. Seems expensive but for the amount of food you receive, it's worth it. Beautifully prepared and high quality food. The service was also excellent and the staff did the best they could to accomodate everyone and make sure everyone was taken care of in a timely fashion. We sat at a communal table (our choice) and met some nice folks, some of whom were tourists like us and some of whom were locals. I will recommend this restaurant to friends visiting Tokyo.
