I have stayed at Hoshinoya hotels before, but this is our first time staying at Hoshinoya Tokyo. I wanted to book this hotel when they first opened, but wasn't sure whether it was a good location, and whether it was worth booking it when it is in the business district of Tokyo. What can be so special about Hoshinoya when their brand is representative of hot springs, tranquility, zen and NO TV in their rooms?

However, I decided to give it a try this trip since it was just a couples trip and our priority was to relax. Since the trip was only a few days, there was not enough time for us to travel to outside of Tokyo to stay in onsen hotels.

Am I glad we booked this hotel!!! It was exactly what we were looking for. A modern ryokan that is luxurious, comfortable, very zen and tranquil with impeccable service from the staff and housekeeping, and a hot springs on the top floor that is open aired. The subway station is connected to the basement of the hotel. It's a bit of a walk if you need certain subway lines, but Chiyoda line was super convenient and only 2 minutes walk from the hotel entrance in the basement. Location is convenient in my opinion. We were able to travel to Ginza, Shibuya, Roppongi, Shinjuku, Omotoesando Hills, Daikayama, easily in about 15-20 minutes.

Airport limousine bus from Narita and Haneda serves this hotel, except the stop is in the next building which is only 1 minute walk to the hotel building. The main entrance of the hotel is not on a street that cars can access. It's nice to walk out of the hotel each morning where there are only cafes and restaurants outside.

Hotel concierge was helpful and helped us booked restaurants that I requested.

Love the lounge that offers complimentary hand drip coffee each morning, rice balls (onigiri rice balls), japanese snacks, coffees, tea, water, juice, coke, beer, ice cream, that are unlimited for each guest on that one floor. In the evening, the snacks, candies ramen , soups, change each evening. It's really nice to have such a lounge for guests.

Entire hotel is tatami. Your shoes are taken from your the moment you walk in the main entrance. Never had to wait for our shoes to be ready for us when we walk out There are ALWAYS a number of staff who are just waiting to assist you when you go in and out. You have to walk around the hotel with no shoes or slippers. Just socks or bare feet. Feels like we were at home ....

The hotel has daily japanese music performance, tea ceremony, sake ceremony, and meditation, spa sessions available... but we didn't have time to try these things.

Last but not least, there is one thing special about THIS Hoshinoya hotel, there IS a TV in the room, and it's hidden. So you will only see it if you need it. Kind of cool how they kept their brand's famous feature, yet made an exception to this branch as my husband would have a fit without his TV in the room.

Really special place ... if you want experience true Japanese tradition without having to travel to outside of Tokyo to Hot Spring Ryokans. This might be your perfect solution.

Only negative thing about this hotel was: On Saturday and Sundays, EVERYTHING is closed that is around the hotel. Only convenience stores are opened. Not even a coffee shop is opened. No restaurant opened at all. It was like a DEAD city on the weekend.

Modern Japanese designed Ryokan in central Tokyo with impeccable service and very comfortable rooms. Facilities in the hotel limited and immediate area sterile. No views. Good location for main train station and imperial palace. Don’t expect any life, day or night.

Nice but a bit disappointed ...
Everything was nice except the quilt/ blanket that was crazily hot. Normal room temperature (around 21 degrees) made it impossible to sleep in it, it should be at 16 degrees. We had to stay out of the quilt which is abnormal in such an hotel. Very unpleasant. Shoe system at entrance a bit cahotic (we had to queue to give our shoes! Not acceptable in such a hotel). Room too small and without window whereas it was a « corner room » . Nice but not sure I will come back with these issues. Disappointed because I had high expectations and I liked the whole concept.

Wonderful hotel. The staff were all fantastic. Very attentive without being intrusive and couldn't do enough for us. We were very happy with our room, a great size and the decor was perfect for the hotel design. Spotlessly clean. We loved the onsen, such an amazing space, very special. I loved the fragrance in the entrance foyer, very welcoming. When we return to Tokyo we will definately stay at this property again.
