The island is only a few minutes boat ride away and if you stroll around, only about an hour although you could eek it out to 90 minutes but the church is exquisite as are the restaurants with fabulous fish dishes of course.

The views in all directions look out across the water. Most of the views stretch towards the mountains and the Chiemsee is so large that there is enough to look at and enjoy.

Everyone is friendly and it was a relaxed perfect half day excursion

To visit Herrenchiemsee Palace you must take the Ferry Schfffhart...
But then you should continue after visiting the palace to the next island: Fraueninsel.

This island is beautiful: a Monastery you can see clearly far from the island, a few restaurants worth meal or at least a good coffee and cake, and mainly beautiful flowery gardens all over the island.
The weather was uninviting, nevertheless the gardens were so beautiful that we were not deterred and actually enjoyed the visit...

If you are lucky enough to have some sun ... All the better, and don't forget your camera...

Die Fraueninsel is a small island and it only takes approximately 20 minutes to circumnavigate with no stops. In contrast to the other islands in the Chiemsee, this island is densely populated with more than 50 houses and their inhabitants. The most unique feature on the island is the famous Benedictine monastery Frauenwörth housing Benedictine nuns and right next to a 1,200-year-old cathedral. The monastery Frauenwörth is the oldest nunnery in Germany. The first known abbess was the Blessed Irmengard (died 866) she was buried in the cathedral. Her burial site is still a place of pilgrimage today and the area remains a popular wedding destination. Also, do not miss the small monastery cemetery where some famous artists and other personages are buried.

Translated as the "Women's Island", this one exudes an ambiance which is very relaxing if I may say so myself. The town is small but is full of historical structures and the centerpiece a Benedictine Monastery which is still being used by Benedictine nuns. There are a couple of good restaurants in the place where one could get a good meal and for the shutterbugs, a lot of photo opportunities. This island, together with Herren Insel, is accessible thru tours coming from Munich and is highly recommended for tourists visiting Bavaria.

I like Fraueninsel largely as a place to walk by the water and take in the view. It can get busy on weekends and during the holidays, so early arrival is better. There are regular boats to Prien and Gstadt, as well as other points along the lack. Fraueninsel is a nice stopover if you do the full loop tour.
