The colourful autumn leaves canopy of this place is the highlight during our visit in November. It was a long walk, but it was worth every step of it.

This lovely waterfall, while not all that spectacular, is a highlight of the hike along this rushing mountain stream. Hike as much of it as you can, and this waterfall is a great place to linger and take photos.

This is one of the most impressive of the "flatish" waterfalls along the Oirase Gorge. Easy to photograph. Try various settings to recreate the image just like in the photo for this review.

We started from Nenokuchi - where water from Towada Lake flows into Oirase Stream that makes up the Oirase River downstream. The water was clear and blue right from the start. The information and estimated walking time was quite accurate and it gives plenty of time for photo-taking and just absorbing the fresh, cool air, even in the summer. Where there were bridges across the river, it felt like aircon was blowing!

The woods was beautiful and the path was well maintained and easy to walk, with a number of resting areas. The local bus driver recommended walking upstream, saying that the view was better, and I guess he's right in saying that going upstream is better when approaching the falls, but personally I think it's easier walking downstream than up, and for photo-taking, it doesn't make much difference which direction you're approaching the scenic points.

We saw 3 waterfalls within an hour, including the most beautiful fall - the Choshi Ootaki - and had to turn back as rain threatened. The local and hotel staff are very tuned into the weather conditions (as with most people living in mountains) as it changes dramatically, so take their advice seriously when they tell you to bring an umbrella! Note that there are no shops or toilets along the way until main rest areas so be prepared before you start your trip.

When tired, take the local JR bus that runs along parallel to the stream, but note the times in advance as they only come every hour or so.
