A friendly and warm welcome greeted us on our arrival. Armelle and Michel are superb hosts who have thought of every small detail to ensure your stay at La Cordonnerie is perfect. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable with little details that enhance the homely feel. Rooms are accessed by a narrow, external staircase which has a child safety gate at the top, very useful if travelling with small children. I would not recommend this for hose who struggle with staircases, there is no disabled access to the bedrooms.
The courtyard area is as beautiful as the photographs suggest and it is a perfectly tranquil area to relax and unwind with a cooling glass of Lillet whilst chatting to the hosts about the local area and the small town of Villandraut. The spa pool is a lovely, but not essential addition but I would be lying if I said it wasn't a lovely place to relax!
One thing that I cannot compliment enough was the EXCEPTIONAL breakfast provided in the morning. From the locally sourced, organic honey to the homemade marmalade and jams and the delicious array of smoothie, cream cheese, fresh bread, freshly pressed apple juice, warm chocolate chaud, organic, local yoghurt, home marinaded apricots......the list goes on. This is quite simply the best breakfast I have ever eaten and all the ingredients are locally sourced which makes it a true taste of France.
In terms of location, villandraut is situated on the edge of the Forrest area of Landes de Gascogne, about an hour south of Bordeaux. It is a nice area of France with short drives to some beautiful chateaux and, if you are more interested in regional delicacies, about 45 minutes to sample Sauternes, Armagnac or the beautiful red wine of the Bordeaux region. We travelled with small children and La Cordonnerie is very welcoming to families.
One hint we did ask of Armelle is for a recommendation for dinner. She booked us into a restaurant a short distance from La Cordonnerie called Le Pont Gourmand. It is not mentioned on trip advisor but this restaurant is fabulous. Clearly frequented by the locals the food is exquisite utilising some fabulous French delicacies; snails, foie gras, quail and more. Again, fabulous local produce used in the cooking and the service was very friendly. No English is spoken by the staff so take a dictionary if your French is not of a reasonable standard.
All in all this was a wonderful find and I couldn't recommend it enough to any visitor. You will be well looked after.
