What a wonderful place to have lunch (and I am sure dinner too). We had been to Villa Panza nearby and found this listed in brochure of 'Unione Ristoranti Del Buon Ricordo' which is a list of restaurants that do 'slow food' and have gifts of plates if you have their speciality dish. They are always good.
It was a hot day and we sat in a lovely courtyard outside.
The meal started with a refreshing water melon slice given to everyone - wonderful to cleanse the palette. We then had 3 courses which were all good. One of our party was vegetarian and she had plenty to choose from. The home made ice creak is especially recommended.
Don't worry about getting there - you go past a beer factory (Carlsberg) and a chocolate factory (Lindt) - just keep going and you will get there. It is worth it. And do go to Lindt after lunch where you can buy chocolate for a huge discount - and they sell cool bags to transport it on hot days.
15 minutes from Villa Panza. 45 minutes from Malpenza airport.

We wanted to have a dining experience here such long time ago as this is considered one of the most known and prestigious eateries/caterers of the area; finally this was the occasion (my birthday!)... an old house converted in restaurant, old school looks, nice chimney separating two dining rooms, clean, well maintained... Initially we were received by a waiter who looked us from head to toes (felt myself being inspected by Alfred Pennyworth) after being accommodated we were serviced by a more sympathetic waitress and a friendly-professional waiter of foreign origins... phew.

When sitting there waiting, noticed that customers were wealthy elderlies (some loners and groups); people from high authorities; one was greeted as how do you do Sir (surname), the other “good appetite Judge (surname)” and people commenting (some loudly) about their stock and oil investments, real estate and nautical taxes spread throughout the globe...

Food, well our experience: appetizers were good, tasty, those 5 samples (20.00 p/p); gnocchi di ricotta just OK (12.00) but the ganascino di vitello (15.00) was disappointing. There was so much gravy, too salty, not a slight attempt to decorate the dish, looked like a poured beef stew served in a mess... The bill was 96.00; came high because of this special occasion we wanted to order a special wine; there were no cover charges, no coffee, no desserts... when paid the bill “Alfred” just laid the receipt and left hastily; we understand that the restaurant was full but no thank you, nothing...

This is a very nice, convivial restaurant on the outskirts of Varese. The food is really quite good, and specialised in regional Lombard dishes.

The staff in the main are very friendly, and competent, though we did once have a waiter who was diabolically unsuited to the job.

The young host knows his way around the wine list, and it is a very good list. First it is well balanced, both in its regional coverage of Italy, but also in price points. More importantly it is reasonably priced, making it a wonderful way to try some wines that you might not otherwise think of or by deterred by…this is a major plus.

We have now eaten here many times, so this review reflects that experience. The restaurant overall is fairly expensive, but seems to me to represent good value for what it is. The staff are very welcoming, and even as a formal setting, they are quite welcoming to children too.

The food is excellent: it is not nouvelle or modern, but is extremely well plated, nice to look at, and is delicious, hearty food. We have yet to have a dish that was not a treat.

The deserts and especially their home-churned ice cream are fabulous. When I think of a nice place to go for a family meal, or for a meal with a group of friends, this would be first on my list in Varese.
