The manager was being a bit creepy to the volunteer which was awkward but the place itself was decent. I found the site small compared to the other ones I had visited and not as impressive visually. Inside it had a few good displays but nothing was breathtaking. I would stick to others such as Alnwick Castle.
Small but lovely fortified medieval house that does exactly what it says on the tin. You won’t need long to get round it, but worth popping in if you’re passing.
This is a nice place to visit. It will take about and hour and it has procedures in place to keep you safe at this time. It is dog friendly inside and out. There are a few steps to climb but its not difficult. They do ask you book on line at the moment and the staff are friendly. There are toilets and a small shop.
Parking is £3
Lovely walk inside and round the outside. Lots of history. Helpful staff and covid safe. Dog friendly.
Not your usual castle but interesting never-the-less.
Aydon Castle is a place that talks to you about the past and how people have adapted the building to the needs of the time and the environment. It is small and is not perfectly formed in the traditional sense but in that lies its charm. Imagining it being lived in for so many centuries helps understand how it has changed.
At the end of two narrow lanes it is worth the trip and its isolation is part of its appeal.
The member of staff in the shop, although standing-in for the day, was welcoming and willing to share her knowledge of the place on a warm and sunny September afternoon.
Set away from the busy roads, Aydon Castle is located in a beautifully quiet spot. Lots of interesting historic remains to see. A really nice picnic area within the walls, is a real sun trap on a nice day.
