The photos don't even do this place justice. There was no old fashioned feel or smell anywhere. It is a very comfortable, traditional ryokan and the owners are really welcoming. Admittedly we were their only guests so got exclusive attention. The breakfasts were outstanding. Local veg, salad, melon, with salmon one day and omelette the next, (since one of us can't eat fish.)
if you are coming by train from Tsuroaka, I recommend lunch at the Italian place two blocks from the station and up a flight of stairs. it was a delightful surprise in unpromising looking surroundings.
Haguro San itself was amazing and the hike up Gas San was very enjoyable.

This was the most amazing experience....travelling to Haguro in mid-January - the snow was so high - we caught the bus but the Tourist centre had pre warned teh hotel, as the Manager was waiting at the bus stop for us. We had planned to climb Mt Haguro - well, little did we know the snow was so deep it was unsafe to climb, so the Manager drove up to the top of the mountain, arranged some udon noodles for us at the top and organised directions and a bus for us to get back. What an amazing site...words cannot describe....on the way back on the bus we stopped at the entrance to the five-story pagoda - the walk there (actually the slide down the side on the mountain covered in snow) was on of the most amazing things I have ever done - we all had so much fun. Of course when we came back to the main road the manager was waiting for us to take us back to the ryokan.
Back to the ryokan and we were given the most amazing room - what a treat for travellers to Japan - and the Manager and his wife were so hospitable - we had an amazing dinner, and amazing breakfast and a wonderful time. We woke early so took a walk around the town, deep snow, people clearing street and entrances to their homes, and stunning one in a lifetime opportunity - the Manager also drove us all back to the station in the morning. I will definitely be back in the summer to climb the mountain, and Haguro san will be my first choice for accommodation.

This lovely ryokan is located a short walk from the base of Haguro-san, and so is perfect for a visit to the mountain. It is also almost unbelievably nice: traditional style ryokan with tatami, etc., but very recently updated and very, very clean. Both the toilets and the bath (separate from the room, as is traditional) are very comfortable and well-equipped. My bedroom actually featured an anteroom with a laptop computer with internet access. The decor features many antiques and scrolls. The owner speaks good English, and both he and his wife were extraordinarily gracious. The meals were delicious and serving sizes abundant.

Access via public transportation involves taking a bus from Tsuruoka Station. The tourist information office at the station can tell you which bus to take (though minimal English, so the more advance information you can glean via internet the easier you'll find it). The bus driver was familiar with the property and actually drove me to the very front door to make sure I'd get there, as it was already dark when I arrived. The sign is in Kanji only, so make yourself familiar with it in advance.
