Look no further! The lodge is situated within a 5 min walk to the nearest lift! It's a family owned business for over 40 years, and it truly shows in how they care for you. The staff, as well as the owners, can speak English. We opted for the breakfast, dinner, and lift tickets for two days package for a low cost. My friends and I have deemed this cozy lodge as our annual 'Japanniversary' place. Many of the people we met there have been returning to this place for over a decade. We'll definitely be returning for many years to come!

I stayed a night here while visiting the mountains. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There were English speaking staff, who were really fun to speak with.
The hotel has a very homely feel to it.

We were moved to this hotel after the centrally located hotel we were in was overbooked. We were given a b room although charged for an a room. The room was small, smelly and had nowhere to put clothes. The bed was lumpy and the bedspread dirty. The shared bath was small and could only be used for limited hours although the shower area could be used whenever. Communal toilets were at the end of the corridor and were clean. The hotel is located away from the centre and a good walk in the cold to restaurants. It seems that because the owners spoke English that was all they had to do to make guests happy. The hotel cost was only a little less than the one we had been in but the difference in quality and location like chalk and cheese.

I stayed here for 3 nights during a ski trip to Zao. It's quite basic, but comfortable and clean. Service was friendly, but hit and miss. There wasn't always someone around at the reception desk to assist you. We ate at the hotel restaurant on two nights. The food was good, but we had to eat when at a time that was convenient for the staff rather than us. Also, it's not always clear what's one the menu and what isn't'.

My only real complaint about the hotel was the bed pillows which are rock hard, even by Japanese standards. I ended up stealing a soft pillow from the restaurant sofa each night and then returned it in the morning. No one seemed to mind.

The hotel is about a 3 minute walk to one of the main Zao ski lifts, so it's very convenient in that respect. Overall, we thought Zao was an excellent ski resort. It has a good lift system (no button lifts at all, which i always try to avoid as a snowboarder), loads of great, wide, well-groomed pistes that kept us easily entertained for 5 days. It's snowboarder friendly on the whole (although you'll need to do a bit of scooting about at a couple of points on the mountain, but no worse than most European resorts). We were there at the end of the season, and it was incredibly quiet. We were often the only people on the piste and never queued to get on a ski lift which was a revelation compared to Europe/North America. Apparently 2016 has had terrible snow by normal standards (there were no 'snow monsters'), but we thought the snow was still great. There's no real nightlife in Zao and we only found one quiet bar on the mountain, but I would recommend the resort to anyone and would love to go back again and get some real powder.

Thank you to Mao and your staff for a relaxing and memorable stay in Zao. You looked after us extremely well.

We stayed for 6 nights in Zao Onsen as part of our 3 week snowboard/ski adventure in Northern Honshu across 3 different resorts.

Our room on the 2nd floor was spacious and although, in what appears to be typical in regional Japan, we had 2 single beds in our room, we're not big people so could share 1 comfortably. We had plenty of room for our gear.

The onsens in the bottom of the lodge were clean and relaxing. The overall atmosphere of the lodge was friendly and welcoming and I happily recommend it for stays in Zao Onsen.

The food was plentiful and delicious. The location, about a 10 minute walk up the road to the nearest gondola was a good warm up for our days of skiing.

We had a glorious view of the mountain from our room which changed with each change of the weather.

We would happily stay here again and highly recommend Lodge Scole.
