“Lovely Cottage”

Lovely cottage in a fantastic setting. We stayed at the cottage for a week and were very happy indeed. The main bedroom was especially nice with a lovely 4 poster canopy bed.

The cottage itself was very clean, spacious and well furnished. Plenty of parking and space in the garden. The kitchen was well equipped, but take a knife sharpener as I think the spoons were sharper.

If you are taking kids there is a large paddock with kids play equipment and all looks very clean and tidy.

The walk to Staverton and The Sea Trout inn was about 20 mins, but it's up a steep hill either way so not suitable for those who can't walk too far. However, it is well worth the walk as the food is great. If you are booking a table, let them know you are taking a dog as they will seat you in the lounge not the restaurant. The Coppa Dolla is definitely also worth a visit for the food, however the landlord was a bit too snippy for my liking.

In the blurb in the cottage, there is information on how to get to the river by the Church in Staverton, but they are pretty sketchy. We had to ask some local children, but the directions are: Park outside the church and follow the lane down to the railway crossing. (Time this right and you'll get a great view of the steam train going by). Follow the lane round to the left, and there is a wide gate with a side pedestrian gate on the right. Go through the pedestrian gate and follow the rope fence round the small paddock and you'll come to the river. Pretty much every time we went down there were children swimming and playing on a rope swing. It's shallow here and beautiful. If you follow the path along the river you'll come out beside the steam railway station. NOTE: The small paddock is closed to the public on Sundays, so you can only access the river from the station end.

A couple of simple changes would make it even better. Wifi reception was limited to the kitchen, a small thing but would have been really useful during our stay.

Access to the games room was restricted from 9-5pm, where we would have liked to go an play darts etc in the evening. To be fair here, it says in the blurb that it's closed from 5pm, but we never asked and we did have a key... I understand not allowing use of the pool, but the pool table/darts etc baffled me a bit. Maybe the blurb just needs updating.

Just on the pool, the swim jets weren't working so friends who came for the weekend couldn't swim. There are vouchers for a free day at a gym, but it's pretty for from the cottages (I think about 10-12 miles away).

Couple of board games in the lounge, but no instructions (so off to the kitchen to look them up online....).

There was mention of a pet pack on arrival, however we didn't see anything...

Finally the hot tub.... it was working fine and was lovely and toasty, but the cover was a bit on the tatty side and left bits of the white coating floating about in the tub. One good thing to see was that the water was tested every day.

So, please don't see my comments as negatives, just things for improvement that I'm sure the new owners will get round too in time. All in all definitely somewhere to consider if you are looking for a place near Totnes.

Hi there thanks for the review we are glad you liked the cottage and Estate. Guest reviews are invaluable to us as it allows us to improve the cottages and facilities on site.
You should have informed us of the WIFI not working in the whole of the cottage this has now been resolved. We had WIFi installed every where even in the pool area which is free to all our guests. All our guests have a key to the leisure suite which they can use after 5 pm and before 9 am if the main door is locked. The key gives you access to the snooker table, darts board, table football pool and sauna I understand that you had one however we will now ensure it is fully explained in the guest information pack. Since your review we have sharpened the knives for future guests. We provide a dog pack which consists of a bowl, biscuit and dog blanket I was disappointed that this was not left in the cottage. This was an admin error (lack of communication between us and our house keeping staff) as it was not a direct booking. As for the board games this is the first that we have heard about no instructions so we will replace them. We hope you enjoyed your cream tea that we always provide upon arrival and we hope that you will consider returning in the future we do offer a loyalty discount to previous guests.
