The evening meal was a bit pricey... but the food was excellent: creative and delicious. Definitely worthwhile if you want to go out for a fancy meal, went through practically the whole menu and loved all of it.
The morning meal was over-priced. The Green Welly opposite does a much better range of breakfast options for about half the price. Unfortunately neither of them had any fresh fruit to offer.
As a hotel the bull is ok, but not good value for money, mainly because of the location. It's right on a busy crossroad, in a village which despite being a bit up itself is really just an expensive art gallery and lots of traffic. Of course being a pub it's noisy until at least 11pm often later.
The room doors are in desperate need of 'soft close' hinges as they all slam loudly, which doesn't help the noise situation.
The staff were mixed. Chloe stood out as being a keeper to me. It's not often you get someone who is efficient but unfailingly cheerful and makes each customer feel that she has all the time in the world just for them. Treat her well as she is exceptional.
I got the feeling that the Bull is a great restaurant but doesn't really care about the 'hotel' side of things. When informed that our mirror lighting was broken, making the mirror essentially unusable because of the position of it in the shadows, we got a "Yeah it's been broken for ages." type attitude. Ok? So fix it? We also told them well in advance that we wanted a twin not a double and still had to wait for hours while they sorted that out. Sick of that happening with hotels - why take those details and then ignore them?
On the positive side, there were tea and coffee making facilities including fresh milk, topped up daily, and the rooms were well cleaned. The cleaning staff were very friendly too.
So I guess a 3.5 / 5 - the kind of "Been in worse, been in better" sort of place. Rounded down to the 3 because it was so expensive that you expect more - if it had been better value for money, it could have been a 4.
