I was an hotelier for 15 years and never had to write such a bad report.
To start, whatever time you arrive the front door is locked and you have to push a bell and wait.
When they eventually let you in you see a lovely open courtyard with a prominent notice saying no smoking!!
The bedroom is nice and this is a lovely old building in a delightful old village, but then you see the tiny bathroom. A small bath with hand shower and a small toilet fixed so close to the opposing wall anybody over 5 foot tall finds it almost impossible to sit down on.
The food is at best mediocre and puddings tasted as though they'd been bought in a cheap supermarket. Strangely breakfast costs nearly as much as dinner.
If only the owners invested a small amount this could be a delightful hotel.
They should start by improving hospitality and then try using all the bedrooms themselves so see where the problems are.

I stayed here recently for the second tome, and I still love it ! It's very close to the magnificent L'Abbaye de Bec Hellouin, well worth a visit for the peace and tranquility it offers.
Very nice restaurant with very nice staff. Not great rooms, but good, and quaint, in keeping with whole hotel image - highly recommended.

Room Tip: Do eat here.

We were slightly concerned on arrival at some of the previous reviews. However, the man at reception was polite. He offered us 2 options and we asked if we could see the rooms. A voice from the office called out "non". Not altogether surprising given the warnings. As the hotel is lovely in a beautiful village, and there are no alternative hostelries, we decided to stay. The Madame was not unfriendly but only just so. The other staff were fine. Aperitif in the outside courtyard was lovely. Dinner was good as was the breakfast the following morning. With just a little more French charm, this would a great hotel.

We used Le Bec-Hellouin as our base for a 3-day visit to Normandy. This hotel was convenient, in a small village with no traffic. The hotel is not a big-city place -- the front desk is not a 24-hour operation... for example, check in starts at 4pm. But the building is clean and charming. Our room was comfortable: we had the ground floor handicap access room, which had a large bathroom and a walk-in shower. The food and service at the hotel restaurant was excellent. It was a great place to return to after driving through the surrounding countryside.

Auberge for us is synonym of authentic food well cooked. In this auberge, the bonus was the great presentation. Perfect quantities for us, not too little nor too much. Main dish of duck very tender, with different vegetables and potato gratin. Quickly full so reservation advised at weekends or high season. Most customers were middle aged or elderly that day.
