“No bargain for Economy Plus....”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed 24 October 2018

We flew United round trip from Newark Liberty to Savannah to get to Hilton Head. Typically would fly Delta but this was a late booking and the only flight I could get for our schedule. We flew standard economy on the way down and it was very cramped, and of course the flight was delayed first for maintenance logs then because of air traffic. Overall not too late. Decided to upgrade to Economy Plus for the return. Additional $30/person. As another reviewer points out, you really don't get anything for the money except some (not a lot) additional leg room. We did not get priority boarding, in fact were in the next to last group. No baggage allowance. Wine/Beer cost $7.99 on board. This was not what I expected as I have often used Delta's Economy Plus and you get a lot more for your money. Newark is also no bargain but we had no choice. Will avoid United if at all possible.

What a miserable experience! I don’t believe I have ever flown in such a tight space as I did with this airline from Calgary to Houston. My knees were touching the back of the seat in front of me, and when the child in that seat pushed their seat back, the screen was a about 8• from my face. Adding insult to injury, my row of seats couldn’t recline, making the flight almost unbearable. Everyone on our row was complaining. Then after a lengthy layover in Houston the flight was postponed 3 times, until finally cancelled. No reason given either. We were given vouchers ($57.25) for the Red Lion Inn for the night. Suffice to say I had no intention of staying in a subpar motel, and nor did my first class flying traveling companions. As there was a Mariott at the airport, that’s where we stayed. The flight times the next day changed 7 times (I kept getting notifications on my cell phone) which was also vexing. The good news was that the plane was smaller and actually a fraction more spacious. Not a god experience after a very pleasant one with Delta.

When your airplane ticket is $500 + bags of course (+$30) for a 2-hour flight the least that you expect is that the flight is on time and they don't lose your luggage. That won't happen with United, besides the customer service is terrible its like you are doing them a favor by traveling with them. I won't recommend it at all.

We had a positive experience on our flight to Chicago for an overnight stay on way to Montreal for a cruise. Service was friendly and professional.

We had a similar positive experience on our return flight to Denver from LaGuardia on United. Plus, at check in, we were invited to change to an earlier flight by a very nice Global Services person. That save us a long wait and was totally unexpected.

With no elite status on United Airlines, I did not receive any perks in terms of seating or boarding. My boarding pass for Group 4 in seat 31C was fine. It was a full flight and luckily my spouse has Premier Gold status and they allowed me to accompany him at the time of boarding in Group 1.

The seats are fine with no outlet to plug thins into, but it did have a video in the back of the seat, which I did not use because I had my own device with downloaded shows.

Overall a good flight, nothing out of the ordinary - just another flight. Keep in mind I have already flown on 85 flights on "the other airline" already this year. You may wonder why I flew United this time then? Simply because the schedule United has for Hartford (Bradley International) and Chicago O'Hare with non-stop flights.

So if the schedule is right and the price is within your budget, United is not a bad airline to choose. Oh, the bathroom on this aircraft (unfortunately I don't recall the make/model) was quite surprisingly roomy compared to some of the other airlines bathrooms.
