I have flown with AA before and was not impressed. However, on this trip I was pleasantly surprised. I had a comfortable seat with enough room. The food service was ok. The entertainment was very good. The cabin crew were mostly very friendly and happy. I was able to have more than one drink - although I felt this was pushing things a little with one of the crew!
One small gripe - we had a delay at Heathrow - due to weather. Not a big problem - and I'm not one to go looking for compensation. But I thought AA could have done themselves a great favour if they had offered some vouchers after the 2 hour mark. However, they listed the delay as 1 hour 50 minutes. In reality it was 2 hours 20 minutes. Hair slitting?? A shame.
I took a quick weekend getaway to NYC. The flight from Austin to JFK was wonderful. It was smooth transition onto the plane and on the plane I had a wonderful flight attendant who did a great job. She was engaging and funny too. The return flight from JFK to Austin was different as within 20 minutes of boarding we had to change gates from gate 39 to gate 1. Then we had a late departure of at least 40 minutes. After that the flight went well so overall it was very good still
I do not understand why airlines nickel and dime you for every little thing. Pay to sit in the emergency door. Pay to pick your seat. Pay for this, and pay for that. I feel like the customer service has gone down on flying, the space has decreased and on this airline, on this instance, the attendants were just bored and "over it". The atmosphere is lighter on SW. They know they are cramming you in, but they do it with a smile and an extra bag of snacks!
Basic Economy tickets are a total scam. Be prepared for American Airlines to rake you over the coals for making the mistake of purchasing these tickets. Yes, they have disclaimers about what you cannot do with these tickets, but those disclaimer go nowhere near explaining the full extent to how useless these tickets are. If you buy these tickets, hope that everything unfolds perfectly. If you are delayed at all, or otherwise encumbered beyond your control, it will not matter. You will have to buy a completely new ticket. American Airlines will not help in the slightest, and you will be completely screwed by them. I recommend you never fly American Airlines, but if you do, please don't make the mistake of buying these tickets.
