Review of Air New Zealand

Reviewed 17 April 2024

There was an issue with the plane and had to wait over 4 hours and watch 3 other flights take off. No approach to offer us access to an earlier flights unless we have under twelve year olds. They did not fill up business or premium seats as we had not paid for them. Missed and important meeting. You’re not an airline Air NZ you’re a disgrace.

We were travelling from Queenstown to Auckland with a flight scheduled for 12.10pm. We were notified at boarding time (11.45am) that this was delayed a further 1 hour. Then a few minutes later we were notified that this was now delayed more than 4 hours (4.30pm departure). Whilst we understand that unexpected circumstances arise and this is not the fault of any of the workers as they are ensuring it’s safe to fly, it does not seem to make sense that there were multiple later flights with Air New Zealand, all travelling to Auckland. Instead of utilising these earlier planes for our already delayed flight and just delaying the later flights so that everyone had a slight delay, they kept pushing our flight back and kept the other flights running on time. There was also not the opportunity to transfer to another flight unless you wanted to pay for an upgrade to business class or had young children (which I do not understand how this is a legitimate reason, yes children have additional needs but these needs should be accounted for by the parent if you are a parent who has the privilege to afford to travel with children). Yes we were provided with a small amount of meal vouchers for the one cafe in the terminal (which already had very limited food options) but this does not make up for the cancelled plans and itinerary when travelling. I have travelled extensively and have not ever had delays such as this. It does not leave a very good impression for my first time with air New Zealand. The staff at the airport were professional, however, the planning was poor.

Travelled from Vancouver to Aukland then Rarotonga in March returning in April same route. Had exit row seats down and exit RAR to AUK then Premium Economy AUK to YVR. Service on all four legs was excellent compared to Air Canada, West Jet and Lufthansa - they should be ashamed. Exit row seats had lots of legroom and service, food and beverages were great Order drinks from your seat on the screen along with incidentals included in the flight cost - not a surcharge, like Air Canada and West Jet - even the four hour segment. Staff were excellent. We Offered Up on the last 14 hours leg and got it so in Premium Economy. Nice comfortable seats with legroom, food even better and Economy was fine, and drinks, again all included in flight cost. Apologies made for late starts though none were significant and we arrived in plenty of time for our connections. At the end of the day we'd fly Air New Zealand anytime as they leave everyone else we've flown in the dust. Thank-you!

Had recognition upgrade recognized and flew business class. Seats a bit narrow but managed 4hr sleep in bed mode. Staff were friendly and efficient. I had a wonderful meal of smoked salmon as a starter followed by seared halibut fish. finished off with cheeseboard with a single malt whiskey. Breakfast was dim sum selection. Apart from not state of art seats, flight was pretty good

I always considered Air NZ as a budget airline domestically compared with Qantas but OK internationally. Maybe the short flight to he Cook Islands is treated more like a domestic flight but it had most of the hallmarks of a budget airline where you pay extra for seat selection ect. In particular, you should also be aware that when you purchase a specific seat, you may lose the selection if they change the flight times. We paid an extra $20 to get the choice of better seats but lost them with a minor time change....so $20 for nothing.
