“redirected to Paris due to Cyclone”
Review of Air Mauritius

Reviewed 1 February 2018

we should have flown back from Mauritius to Heathrow but due to a Cyclone several flights were cancelled .However Air Mauritius put us on a flight to Paris CDG.
the plane was a nearly new airbus and the service excellent.
Having got to Paris Air France pulled out all the stops ,got us a room in the hotel airport and a flight back to Heathrow the following morning ,which given my wife need for wheelchair assistance ,was really welcome

This review is for MK440 however I will also include experiences from MK441 9 days earlier.
My wife and I flew from Perth to Mauritius return for our annual holiday. As usual we booked and paid for business class seating.

Boarding at Perth was a bit of a mix-up with no real organisation to it. It was slightly better in Mauritius on the return trip.

First impressions of the A330/A340 business class cabin was that it looked very good and quite stylish. It looked like a nice place to be for a 7-8 hour flight. It really wasn't.

Service was decidedly average on both flights with a complete mix-up with my wife's meal. Simply not good enough at the price we paid for a premium flight experience.

A couple of things really made me angry:

Just before "top of descent" into Mauritius I had to use one of the two toilets situated at the front of the A340. In over 500 flights and 1.5 million kilometres of flying in the last 15 years I have never seen such a toilet in such a disgusting state. It was appalling.

On the return flight, which was overnight, I had the cabin crew lean over my wife to close my window blind not once but four times. I like to fly with the blind open and when I pay to sit in that window seat I certainly will have it open. I have never had this happen on any flight before and it was only when I got angry that they stopped trying to close it.

As the title says it was an average business class experience. Air Mauritius, in my opinion, is not one of the worlds greatest airlines.

Would I fly with them again? Well, I probably wouldn't be going to Mauritius again not that it isn't a beautiful and amazing country so the likelihood is low. If I were to travel between Perth and Mauritius I would probably look at other flight options.

12 hours flight with a really great food, I have to say it was healthy balanced.
the crew was really nice and friendly, they gave to my little daughter a small bag with some toys for the journey and on the way back a full bottle of water to my pregnant wife.
Leg room not bad, I am 1.80Cm.
Entertainment, there is no many movies and the classification seems to be wrong, you can have 2016 movies in Classic area, overall not bad.

I'm sure this airline has newer models in its fleet but this wasn't one of them. The seats and leg room were the worst I have had the discomfort to endure & I have been on smaller planes and smaller airlines. The food was not worth your putting into your body to consume, refreshments were basic and the whole inflight entertainment system was tired & pointless. You had a limited choice of movies which all started at the same time so you had to quickly decide what you wanted to watch and then if you fancied something else it was just tough luck. The crew were all very pleasant and I certainly cant fault any of them but the we were on was certainly overdue for a complete overhaul to bring it into this decade.

I will put this onw trip advisor seeing as Air mauritius deleted it from their facebook page. So here it is:

In the 11 years that I have been visiting Mauritius, I can honestly say that your service is progressively getting much worse. MK440 to perth last night. Firstly get a call for parents with children to come to check in first. Go the check in point and everyone (the whole plane) is lining up. Asked two young guys who I think worked for the airline and they didnt seem to know what was going on (or didnt care. I couldnt really tell). Get on the flight and you get a greeting at the door, but as you walk down the aisles the staff are just chatting away to each other, no welcome or greeting to customers (trust me 11 years ago on my first trip, it was the exact opposite. Everyone greeted you! ). Then during the flight, my wife brought to my attention that the male host was displaying frustration that i had stacked up the trays after the meals on my table. Let me explain. Its midnight, i have two young children trying to comfortably sleep. The trays were stacked on one table so that they could lie down without potentially knocking their tables and spilling their food. I did not know that there was a protocol for tray stacking. So sorry for inconveniencing your flight ritual! You could have politely explained this to me after the first meal not expressed your frustration by madly cleaning my tray after the second. If you dont love your job mate, go do something else!
I just wish there was another airline to take for direct flights from Perth. If I can afford it maybe next time take a cheap flight to Malaysia and then catch an Emirates flight to Mauritius just to avoid your sloppy service.
