I booked Mariner of the Seas as a mother/daughter birthday trip. I definitely felt it was a good fit for my mom who is in her mid-60s. I also had a nice time, but I've been on ships that were a little more fun. We sailed during the 4th of July weekend and I liked how festive the ship was in celebrating the holiday. This was my first time sailing from Galveston. I thought on-boarding process and pretty well organized and easy.

I would say average for the food and cabin. The rooms are old well it is a old ship. No place to fill up your water containers. The bars would say I can give you two glasses, they stated you could also purchase water. I would go to the Windjammer and used any number of glasses of water to fill my container. The spa is missing a number of things like a pool, hot tub and various amenities. My biggest complaint is when we were leaving they told my sister that there was an issue and she needed to go to customer service. So I went with her to the desk. They stated they had an issue with her debit card on file. I stated how much is the bill they stated less than 300.00, I told them to charge it to my card. We got back home and her husband checked her bank account and found they had charged her over 1100.00. I contacted Royal and once they sent her bill over I seen what they had done. When i told them to charge me. They ended up listing my room as hers and they deleted my credit card that I had on file. However they did charge me with one of the items. In speaking to customer service it was just a waste of time. They could not understand that they in fact had somehow charge the same card that they stated did not work as we were trying to leave the ship on the final day. They told her in order to charge me they needed both of us on the line. I do understand why they said that, I told my sister it is just easier for me to give her the money which I did. I just do not understand how they messed this up. When we left the ship everything was charged to me but in the end someone reversed everything and charged it to her account.

My wife and I just returned from a New Year's cruise on the Mariner of the Seas. As usual, everything was great! Excellent service, food and drink. However, the highlight of the cruise has to be Jayne Anastacio performing on the piano in the Schooner Bar every evening. She has a repertoire of hundreds of songs - hits from 70 years of popular music from which the audience can make their personal requests. She performed for 3+ hours every night and has an amazing vocal range. Her cover of "I Will Always Love You" was simply sensational and could stand alongside Whitney Houston's any day of the week! Thank you Jayne for making this such a memorable trip!

Fresh off a 5 night Christmas cruise on Mariner of the Seas, two adults and 2 teenage daughters on their first cruise. We wanted a smaller ship to get our feet wet with cruising. I would say it was a great "starter" cruise. The common spaces have all been updated, but the cabins are original. I was impressed with how clean everything was considering the age. I noticed housekeeping wiping down every inch of the bunk beds and even the back of the tv. Our cabin was at the back of the ship and very quiet. We stayed in an interior cabin with the bunks that come down from the ceiling. I would not do that again with two teenagers. There was a ladder but it's more fun to jump down on your parents in the middle of the night when they had to go to the bathroom. We made it work from a space perspective but there was a lot of luggage juggling and one bathroom was just not enough for all the skin regimens happening. In future, I would book two connecting rooms or at the very least the pull out couch vs bunk rooms. The ice skating show was a highlight and we enjoyed ice skating ourselves. Be sure to reserve your time early through the app. The nightly shows were okay-very talented singers/dancers but the content they were given was just a little odd. We loved the surf rider and waterslides. There were always available deck chairs, either right in the middle of the party or in quieter areas. The miniature golf was great after dinner. If there was something I was a little underwhelmed about, it would be the food. Everyone talks about how amazing cruise food is. While there was a lot of it, there wasn't anything in the buffet or main dining that I thought was absolutely fabulous. We ate at Jamie's one night, and it really was awesome. In future, I would book a dining package. Two things we could not have lived without on this trip that I learned from reading other reviews.....magnetic hooks were awesome for everything and cheap plastic water bottles to refill with cups from the Windjammer. One thing I wish I would have known more about before the cruise was the app. Yes, I downloaded it beforehand but didn't realize they posted menus, dress themes, and activities to reserve ahead of time. I feel like if I had not paid more than double (holiday week) the typical going rate of this cruise, it would have been a great value. Overall, it was a great week and a good first cruise experience. I asked the girls if they preferred our typical beach trip or the cruise. They said the cruise!

Cruised with our 3 kids over Thanksgiving holiday, so the ship was at capacity, but other than the Windjammer on embarkation day, you wouldn't have known it as there was plenty of room to spread out, even on sea days. Read plenty of negative reviews so we set the bar low, but we had a great time relaxing as a family. Have been sailing with DCL in recent years, so we knew that service and the overall enthusiasm of the staff might be a half-notch below that level (it was), but otherwise the food, activities and ports were very comparable. Food in the MDR and especially the pizza was much better than DCL, and we appreciated the speed of service everywhere and the focus on health hygiene with the "washy washy" lady manning the door to the buffet. Kids club hours are still more limited compared to DCL and they would occasionally hit capacity limits, but my kids were eager to return to the 12th floor twice a day to enjoy the group activities that were more PE-oriented and as a result, wore my kids out in a good way. My teen didn't have as much luck, but we also find DCL is more hit-and-miss with the older kids. Ship is older but is in great shape and although the room and hallway motifs are still straight out of the 90's, we found our junior suites very comfortable and quiet. Only thing to note is a lack of outlets, with none by the bed. Loved the mid-sized nature of the ship - getting on was a breeze, and we were off the ship and at our car within 30 minutes at disembarkation. Activities were plentiful enough to fill most days, although there definitely aren't any fancy attractions outside of the Flowrider. Evening programming was somewhat limited and most folks gravitated to the bars throughout the ship at night, which was a nice change compared to the smaller Disney ships and the very fun-challenged adults-only area. One day we'll work our way up to the megaships, but until then, we'll keep enjoying these smaller cruise ships.
