Getting there…

This was our second cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship, our first being a honeymoon cruise on the Harmony of the Seas four years ago. We had such a wonderful time that we wanted to share the experience with our family so this time we brought all of our adult kids and their significant others. Overall it was an excellent week.

The cruise line took numerous precautions due to the pandemic and made us feel at least as safe as when we are in our local environments. Vaccines were required for all eligible passengers and crew, care was taken to minimize close gathering, masks were enforced while in doors in public spaces unless one was eating or drinking, and hand sanitizer stations were everywhere. I was particularly impressed with how the crew was able to handle gently reminding passengers to mask up without being confrontational. Further, we were sailing at reduced capacity which also made the boat seem less congested.

Our cabin was a balcony stateroom and was well designed and comfortable. A few more electrical outlets would have been nice, but this it always the case on cruise ships. We were in 7166 near the bow elevator lobby and it was very convenient.

All of the dining options we tried were very good and the service was excellent. The entertainment options were also a few rungs above what we have seen on other cruise lines.

The instant messaging function on the Royal Caribbean app was a very convenient feature, though I do not think RC should charge extra for it if one is already paying for their abysmal internet service.

A few less than positive observations:

The crew is largely comprised of people for whom English is not their first language. The heavy accents were often difficult to understand and this was further exacerbated by the muffling effect of the masks. I do not mean to disparage. Their English was certainly better than my command of any other language, however it did make communication a challenge. We also found that the public address volume was so loud that the voice transmission was often over-modulated so that it could not be understood. I was prepared to chock this up to my 60 year old ears until several of the younger family members mentioned the same issue.

Our largest complaint was in the shore excursions. If you do not book through the cruise line you run the risk of being marooned if your excursion has a problem that causes you to return late. This being the case, we booked everything through the cruise line. One outing on St. Thomas was cancelled. We were able to find another excursion but most of the more desirable ones had already sold out. Then the same thing happened twice for our excursion on St. Maarten. Our first choice was canceled a week before the cruise, and then our second choice was canceled the night before we docked. At that point the only remaining options were not desirable at all, so we elected to spend the day exploring the shopping district of St. Maarten only to discover that it was a national holiday (St. Maarten’s Day) and all of the stores were closed. We were hard pressed to even find a restaurant for lunch. I feel that RC should do a better job of offering more reliable shore excursions.

Finally, the internet offered on the ship is grossly substandard and RC should be ashamed to charge money for it. They bill it as the “fastest internet at sea.” In another place I read that it rivals the speeds of home internet. I initially had the Surf package. I was only able to achieve download speeds of less than 1 mbps and uploads that were too low to register. Needless to say, this was too slow for many websites to even load before timing out. When I complained they upgraded me to the “Surf and Stream” package where I was rewarded with download speeds of less than 2 mbps. Fast enough to surf, but videos froze up and buffered when trying to stream. I feel that charging for this service is a ripoff and detracts from Royal Caribbean’s brand. I do not recommend wasting your money on it.

In short, this was an excellent week and we would consider sailing with Royal Caribbean again, though there are certainly some remaining cobwebs to be sorted as they ramp back up to full operations.

Rock and Roll Show

Boat is great. They have a rock and roll show each night the woman is awesome and opens then Joe Pesci comes on and sings and it just sucks. They guy was washed up 20 years ago. Go until she stops. He opens with Bill Joel or Elton John and is horrible. He should stick to the keyboards and guitar.…

Worst Experience Ever and Didn’t Even Go!

I never write reviews like this but after what we went through I felt I had to! This is the worst company and cruise line we have ever encountered. We booked a 5 day cruise out of Baltimore in June, sailing to Bermuda. Paid and got a confirmation with reservation number. As of yesterday, no further communication. Went online to look at excursions, drink packages, etc. After putting in our information, pop up box came up saying no reservation found. So we called the customer service number. They pulled up our reservation, and they tell us our reservation has been CANCELED! WTF?!?! The first agent cannot give us more information, passes us to another agent. The agent confirms that yes, our reservation has indeed been canceled. The ship was overbooked, so we were canceled. Too bad NOT ONE PERSON FROM ROYAL CARIBBEAN CONTACTED US!!!! NOT ONE! The overbooking happened because some cabins needed maintenance. They may have some available. We got passed to yet another agent. This one tells us there are some upgraded balcony cabins available we can be booked in - for an ADDITIONAL $1700!!! WTF!?!? This is their screw up, not ours, why do we have to pay an upgrade charge??? We said no way, we want a refund. The agent says they really can’t give a refund, they can give us “cruise credit” to be used later. So, we can’t go on this cruise, you all screwed up, AND, you don’t want to give us our money back??? How exactly does that work??? The agent did finally, reluctantly agree to refund us, however so far that remains to be seen. We have wait 5-10 business days to see if the money is back in our account. We are screwed on our vacation we were very much looking forward to. We can’t go book another vacation at this point. We may be screwed on what or some of what we paid for this one. We will NEVER, EVER consider Royal Caribbean and will tell everyone we know NOT to ever book this cruise line. Worst. Experience. EVER.…

Oasis of the sea experience

I Always wanted to travel by this huge cruise.it has some unique activities different from other cruises.it has zipliner.s and beautiful amazing central park.our balcony view with the park was breathtaking. Very neat and tidy cruise ship.staff was very helpful. Inspired of all good points food was just okay and so monotonous that you won't believe.last not the least.entertainment was so boring. My God!!.Port of call at cococay was good enough. Food served over there was free of cost and 👏..on the whole it was a good experience but without good stage programs.though it was a 7 day cruise but there was nothing exceptional to enjoy.…

They truly go above and beyond

It is quite obvious that there is a huge incentive plan at Royal Caribbean for both customers and employees. Loyalty to RC gives you huge perks and employees who get good reviews get bonuses. Because of this, you get experienced customers and exemplary assistance from the staff. 5 star service was evident most of all when looking at room/ship cleanliness and wait staff. Aqua 80 is EXCELLENT but so are many of the other shows. CATS.....not for me, but it was still well-done! Most importantly, Royal Caribbean really does go above and beyond to ensure that all guests have a wonderful experience. One negative is the large amount of deck space given to smokers. That part of the deck smells so bad that we would walk all the way around the other side just to get away from them. With vaping, I wish they would just have a vaping section and allow smoking in the casino. There is no reason to destroy an area with two water slides, a pool, and a hot tub buy letting the smokers exhale all over it.…

First timers get First rate experience

We are first time cruisers and did a ton of research before deciding on Royal Caribbean and the Oasis. We wanted a first rate experience and they delivered: ROOM: The balcony cabin was clean, roomy, and comfortable. The bed while a little firmer than we prefer was larger than expected (queen plus or king). Plenty of room in the bathroom for one. Lots of places to store your things. Table and chairs for relaxing on the balcony. SERVICE: 5 star customer service. Have a question? They took care of it. Need an extra pillow or ice in your room everyday, just ask and wish granted. By the last night our dinner servers brought our regular drinks without having to ask what we wanted. It was great. ENTERTAINMENT: Our teen boys loved the teen club. All the shows we attended were first rate - Illusionist, Musicians, Hush dance party, Aqua 80 water show, Comedy. There was something for everyone and we got into everything we wanted to see. COCO CAY - Everything advertised and then some. We would go again just for another day on Coco Cay. Something for each of us - rides, slides, wave pool and more for the teens and loungers, umbrellas, swim up bar with music for mom and dad. Sandy beaches, palm trees, delicious food. A few things that weren't the best: - The pool slides have a rough transition between the solid and clear portions which hurt your back if you aren't careful. - The desserts. There were a few that were good, but overall my sweet tooth was not impressed. The rest of the food was good though.…
