Transport/car and driver Cabanaconde to Cusco

Hey there,

We would like to travel from Cabanaconde to the SV. Do not want to travel via Puno, since we are not visiting lake Tiki. Besides that we do not want to take a night bus. Does anyone know what the costs of private transport would be...if there is any?

Thanks!

I can't help with private transport... I only know it would be expensive.

Look at 4M Express. It is a tourist bus service. They go from Chivay to Cusco for $65. There are buses from Cabanaconde to Chivay.

Cheaper but longer would be to go back to Arequipa (there are public buses from Cabanaconde to Arequipa, 17 soles). Most buses from Arequipa to Cusco are overnight but CIVA has a day bus which takes 11 hours and costs $14.

Hey!

Thanks again. Yes we had found the 4M express via Pachama hostel. In that case we first need to go back to spend a night at Chivay. Therefor I would think a car and driver would be faster and maybe just a cost efficient. Have send an email to Pachama to find out if there is some kind of taxi service but have not heard from Ludwig yet....

Thanks,

Sofas our hostel found one for 360. But the 4M Express may be a safe and comfy option.

We visited the Colca Canyon this time last year. It is indeed a spectacular place. Depending on your level of adventure, you could do what we did: Rent a car at Avis in Arequipa and drive to Cabanaconde and stay at the Homestay Pachamama hostel. The drive is harry but doable. Leave early, take it slow and enjoy the scenery. It took us about six hours with many stops for pictures and meals. It's a nightmare getting out of Arequipa, but after 10 miles of so of stop and go, the traffic calms down. The road all the way to Chivey is very well maintained -- as good as any in the US. But for about the first half, you will have to contend with a constant stream of trucks and buses, many of them trying to pass whenever there's the briefest of straightaways. Eventually this too ends and there's mostly just you and the incredible high mountain scenery.

After Chivey the road becomes dirt, but it too is well maintained and the scenery even more spectacular. A car gives you huge flexibly that a bus can't. Most of the bus tours we saw were white vans in the hundreds heading to the condor viewing point just outside of Carbanaconde. The tourists in those vans have to endure the exact same ride, but they're crammed in with no chance to stop and take pictures or explore except on the tour operator's very tight schedule.

If interested read more about it from a good tour book like like Loney Planet. Visit the excellent Homestay Pachamama website. And learn at least some basic Spanish. Be sure to bring plenty of cash as credit cards in the canyon are sometimes not accepted if the phone authorization is out which is a common occurrence. For credit cards, Visa is king in Peru. There's a cash machine in Chivey. Don't expect to be able to get a cash advance on a credit card at any bank in Peru except though a cash machine. Ok, maybe in Lima, but that's about it.

Hiking in the canyon is also highly recommended. Hire a guide, or go by yourself with a good map, available on the internet or at Homestay Pachamama. If you can do the Inka trail, you can handle the trails of Colca. We found both about the same level of difficulty. Lodging available at the bottom. But book in advance. Llahar Lodge great. The Oasis also well worth it.

Enjoy.

Hey there,. Thanks ks for your post. And yes we have visited the canyon in February/march for 3 nights. We took a local bus from Arequipa. And yes it took us for hours to get out of town, and the journey took us 9 hours to get at Pachamama . The scenery is wonderful and our kids enjoyed our stay even though the rain season meanslits of rain in the afternoon and some mist... That spoiled the view but not the fun. We took a 4M Express taxi bus service to Cusco. Due to mudslides they needed to take an alternative road so you can imagine it took us a while. We enjoyed our family adventure in Peru and would love to come back one day.... LAURA
