What currency to use

Hello,

When shopping in the towns and at stores, can you use American money as well as Fijian money? What is the best to use when buying goods or for dinners?

Thank you kindly.

Welcome to the forum, Smittyman11.

Fiji has it's own currency. You might be able to USD at some high end duty free shops. That said, FJD will be needed for meals, souvenirs etc. in towns. You may also be able to use a credit card. In addition to fees your card charges, know resorts, shops, etc., charge around 3% when paying by credit card.

Resorts are mostly cashless meaning, any drinks, meals are put on account and paid when you check out, not pay as you go. Exchange money at the Western Union office at the airport in Nadi. No fees, and will get a much better exchange rate than at LAX. To alleviate the charges being questions on checkout, suggest notifying your bank/credit card company the dates you will be in Fiji, and to expect charges. We saw a guest have their charges questioned when they were checking out. It finally got settled, but was time consuming, and very stressful for them.

Have a wonderful vacation.

Smittyman11,

I would say if they did allow you to pay in American Dollars anywhere in Fiji you would only get Fiji Dollars as change and the exchange rate would be bad like exchanging money in resort lobbies.

You will also find that most resorts chage a tax of around 2.5 - 3% on your credit card when you pay at the end of your stay along with a possible 2.5 - 3% transation charge from you bank.

I would suggest if possible have Fiji dollars and pay Cash.

Fiji dollars. You may find some hotels will accept your currency but you won't get a very good exchange rate.

Unless everything is prepaid you will need local currency...

Do remember to get some smaller denomination notes at the Western union office at the end of the arrivals hall at the airport if taking a taxi as they don't normally have a lot of change and do negotiate the price as they don't use meters.
