Milford half day hike toyr with boat ride

Hello

We are looking at the Half-Day Milford Track Guided Hiking Tour which includes a boat ride at milford sound. Has anyone done it and know whether the boat ride covers a good portion of the regular milford day cruise or do you still recommend getting the milford day cruise? Thanks!

Coud you please post the link to the tour you're looking at?

To access Milford Track (from either end - but sounds like your hike will be from the 'end' end) you have to take a boat.

From Milford Sound end it's a short (15mins?) cruise up a river - rather than out in the main body of the fiord itself.

So, just need to check what the tour means by 'boat cruise' - whether just the transfer, or and actual cruise of the fiord.

Agreed. "Boat ride" doesn't sound like it is much more than transportation to the track. I presume this is the one to Giants Gate Falls?

An actual "Milford Sound Cruise" will cover much more than your transport to the track and would have to be booked separately.

That is what I would understand too, from the description. It is about a 10 minute water taxi ride on the small boat that ferries people off the Milford Track from Sand Fly Point to Milford Sound main wharf.

Fiordland outdoors run the casual boat over to the track at both ends for day walks in

The trip from deep water basin to sandfly point is a short ride of about 5 minutes not into the main sound

Have done the walks from both ends

Most people do thier trip at the Milford sound end to sandfly point and walk into giants gates falls and back

you will need to take the optional milford sound cruise to see the milford sound. that trip just is a short shuttle across to sandfly point (yep, there are thousands of hungry sandflies). and it just walks in and out to the giant gate falls. Its a very easy walk in mostly flat forest trails.

personally, there are much better walks around the greater area such as lake marian or key summit.

Thanks so much everyone! Your responses are incredibly helpful and we will follow the advice. We will take a real cruise to see the Sound and will hike another place as recommended by nzp0ppy. Many thanks to everyone. Such a great community.
