Snow and the road from Te Anau to Dunedin

After an awesome fiord tour today, we are now holed up in Te Anau while a late fall snow falls outside. Could anyone tell me what the road is like between Te Anau and Dunedin (mountains, curves, etc) and whether roads in NZ are plowed after a storm? We are driving a rental Camry and don't have chains.

The roads should be plowed; while it's been a long time since I drove that particular road I don't recall it being particularly difficult and there are no major passes on it. Best bet would be to chat to locals (at a service station is probably a great place to start) as they'll have the best advice.

Did you drive from Te Anau to Dunedin? Unfortunately, the weather here is expected to be wet through Wednesday. The snow has mostly melted and we are left with slushy streets. See:

Besides

also check the Otago Daily Times for coverage about local weather conditions.

Shame about the weather. Have a look at the city's tourism website for some rainy day suggestions http://www.dunedinnz.com/visit/home

We did make it this afternoon after renting some chains on a section of road where they were required. As it turned out, the road was just fine. I drive all winter in much worse conditions but on holiday we are a bit more conservative as we don't know what to expect if the elevation changes, etc. Thanks for the links on the local weather, we are still hoping to make an Elm Wildlife Tour tom'w so all is well!

Good to know you made it to Dunedin okay. Though, given the abysmal weather, it's a mixed blessing. I hope you enjoy the Elm Wildlife Tour despite the rain and cold and I hope you see penguins!
