Hi Naomi,
I had a quick search and found that Intercity go as far as Tairua, but looks like you would need to take the Go-kiwi shuttle to Whangamata.
Do-nut island is special. I love that surf beach, yet you may find just as much enjoyment staying in Tairua and taking the ferry over to Pauanui, or out to Slipper island if possible.
Looks like Naked buses also go to Tairua.
