Mosquitoes - Shangri-la Yanuca island

Hi,I’m travelling in a couple of weeks and just found out I’m pregnant and concerned about the mosquitoes/ Zika virus.

Has anyone travelled recently and can tell me how bad mosquitoes are there?

Thanks 🙏

Although not travelled recently we found that mosquitoes are normally around at dusk and dawn so if you can refrain from going outside at those times or wear long sleeved clothing and pants along with some repellent.

When travelling to Fiji we normally take a product called "Bug off" when traveling from Australia in our checked luggage.

Hi AbbySydney, and congratulations on your pregnancy.

You might read the recent reviews for the resort, then send a private message to some asking about mosquitos and other questions you might have. I recommend taking plenty of mosquito repellent with you, and some light long sleeved blouses, and slacks for the evening.

For other suggestions of what to take with you, as well as helpful information, have a look at the following compiled by current and past forum posters. Though the link is old and can no longer be edited it is still relevant. Latest information on fees in the following link:

Here are some tips/thoughts to assist with your planning.

If you take a taxi or private transfer to the Shangri La, ask your driver to stop at a market on the way for snacks, sodas, bottled water, etc. It will be cheaper than purchasing them at the resort. In addition to taxis, Micks Fiji, Uniquely Fiji, Tewaka, and Epic Tours also provide transportation from the airport as well as for tours. Would compare prices as to which is best.

You will need FJD for taxis, as the drivers don't take credit cards. Be sure to get some bills in small dominations as your driver may not be able to make change. Money can be exchanged at the at the currency exchange booths or ATMS at the airport in Nadi. They are open for all arriving/departing flights, and have a good exchange rate. It is recommended to get some bills in small dominations as your driver may not be able to make change for larger bills. The below link has the latest information on fees.

We just got back from our trip to that area. I got quite bitten up even though I used repellent; my traveling friend had nary a nibble. Go figure!

April is a terrible month for bugs and bitey things in the south pacific tropics, they all come out for a nip and a nibble. Their last hurrah as such before the end of the wetter/humid summer season turns to more moderate temperatures.

Yes, I'd read that about the blood type. :-( Can't do much about that, just bring tons of after-bite stuff.
