The resort will probably have a compulsory paid celebratory meal that evening - or are you looking for something different?

Hi DianeSSS, and welcome to the forum.

As mentioned by travlntheblood, the resort will mostly likely have a special meal as well as some activities planned. The resort we stayed at had a lovo dinner, followed by a Meke, (Fijian storytelling by song and dance), ending with a bon fire on the beach. It was a lot of fun, and without a doubt, our best New Year's ever. Suggest you contact the Shangri la regarding their plans for the evening/night. Past reviews mention a buffet, BBQ, live band, and activities on the beach.

As to activities/tours have a look at the websites below.

Ecotrax is a very popular tour with families, looks like a lot of fun, and gets excellent reviews. The tour is already booked through October. If interested in doing the tour, you might want to book sooner than later.

Sigatoka River Safari: Jet boat, village visit, cave tour.

Rivers Fiji offers river rafting/kayaking.

Some tips:

If you take a taxi or private transfer to the resort ask your driver to stop on the way for snacks, beer, sodas, bottled water, etc. It will be cheaper than purchasing them at the resort. You will need FJD for taxis as the drivers don't take credit cards. Money can be exchanged at the currency exchange booths or ATMs at the airport in Nadi which are open for all arriving/departing flights. In addition to taxis, Micks Fiji, Uniquely Fiji, and Epic Tours also provide transportation from the airport and well as for tours.

To help keep the price down, and for having drinks in your bure, recommend purchasing alcohol at the duty free shop at the airport in Nadi. We can't purchase our brand of alcohol in Fiji, so take the amount of alcohol allowed by customs in our checked luggage.

For other suggestions of what to take with you, as well as helpful information, see the below link which was compiled by current and past forum posters. Though it is old and can no longer be edited it is still relevant.

hi Dianne,

Regarding your nice restaurants for nye, given the size of the Shangri La, I doubt whether they could have a single mandatory nye dinner option. The best bet is for you to contact the resort to clarify this. Resorts that tend to have this would outline this mandatory dinner option as part of the booking in my experience.

It has been 15 years since I last stayed at the Shangri La, so my information will be out of date. There are a few eating options at the resort varying in cuisine and quality. Hopefully someone who has stayed here recently might chime in, but the alternative is that you could look at the Tripadvisor reviews of each.

The local restaurant that I took my family to was Gecko's and this was memorable as they had a nightly dancing show. This was a 10 minute walk (short taxi ride) away. The food was good and the decor was simplistic. It was great for kids as, there were Gecko's climbing the supports for the roof.

You could check the Tripadvisor restaurants located near Yanuca Island to see if there are other local restaurants that may be suitable for your family.

Regarding sight seeing options, if your family is up for some adventure, Hydro Sports offers Jetski safaris from ShangriLa. This is a 3 hour trip whereby two ppl can ride a jetski and you will travel to natadola beach where you will have a snack and do a quick snorkel. I recently did this staying at the Intercontinental, but also with Hydro Sports. You will need to check the current cost with Hydro Sports. It is not cheap, but is certainly a good adventure activity and a chance to see more than the resort.

Hopefully this was helpful. I hope that people who have recently stayed at the Shangri La are able to give you some more suggestions regarding restaurant options. Enjoy your trip.

We have eaten at Gecko's while staying at the Shangri la and found the meals quite good.

I would feel the best option would probably be what they put on at the Shangri la but you could certainly check with both but being NYE Gecko's maybe Resort Guests only.
