driving from Queenstown to or Fox Glacier

We are hiring a car & intending to drive from Queenstown to Fox Glacier, stay the night, then onto Greymouth in mid May.

Would we be better staying 2 nights along the way to Greymouth?

Queenstown to Fox is too far in a day - especially with risk of frosts in May. There is not enough time to drive fresh and enjoy several short (and slightly longer) walks.

NZ is very much a road trip country where the journey is as much of the adventure as the destination.

Much better to have a night in Wānaka, then continue to Fox.

Wānaka is minimum an hour from downtown Queenstown - but you'll want to stop at the Crown Range viewpoint, Cardrona pub, maybe the bra fence and Cardrona Distillery.

In Wānaka there are stacks of great restaurants, short walks, Puzzling World, Wanaka Lavender Farm, Hook (Salmon fishing), Mou Waho cruise, cycle trails... and much more.

Departing Wānaka after breakfast you will want to stop at the Blue Pools (allow at least an hour); Fantail Falls, Thunder Falls, Ship Creek.

You'll get to Fox early afternoon, explore the area.

Next morning - early - walk Lake Matheson (best chance for a glassy lake and Mt Cook reflections). Its a further 20min drive to Franz Josef Village. You may want to visit the kiwi centre there. Okarito Lagoon is also worth a drive/ visit.

Hokitika is more often recommended as the place to stay - a bit more 'tourist friendly' (more happening). Then you can also visit Hokitika Gorge the next morning before heading wherever you're off to next...

On your trip from Wanaka to Fox Glacier don't miss blue pools walk.

On your night at Fox Glacier check ou the minnehaha nature walk at the bottom of the village with glow worms at night.

As mentione best to stay the night at Hokitika and do check out Hokitika gorge
