Memorial Day New York

For most of us, Memorial Day means the unofficial start of Summer. Beach rentals usually start on this date. Lots of stores have sales running. And many, like myself, are having bar-b-cues with guests.

For my dad, Memorial Day means something quite different. He served on the front lines in Korea. He sustained injuries but thankfully came home to get married, have kids, and has been blessed with a long and fruitful life. Many of his friends were not so lucky.

For those in NYC and all over America, this is also a day to think about those service man and women who gave their lives in the service of a higher cause. For many of you coming to America, especially our European visitors, your own freedoms have been preserved by the sacrifices of our troops. Especially those who gave all.

Enjoy your weekend bar-b-cues - I know I will. But, do pause for a moment to remember those who have fallen in combat.

Yesterday, I was on board the USS San Jacinto in SI. At the same time a 91 year old man who was the last Pearl Harbor survivor who lives on SI, with his family, visited the the ship. It was quite remarkable. For NY1 watchers, you can see what I mean if they ever post it on their website (Staten Island). It was on tv yesterday, but NY1 is slow when it comes to posting things.

Yes - remember them all. Those with us and those who are gone.
