Hi

Memorial Day is considered a Federal Holiday where banks and post offices etc. are closed. Restaurants and stores are open. Memorial Day is a Holiday to remember those who died in service.Manhattan will have fleet week going on, very interesting.

It won't really be any busier than normal, in fact, certain neighborhoods, such as the Upper East and West Sides, may be quieter, as many New Yorkers go out of town Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day signals the unofficial start of summer, in addition to it's more important meaning as a day to pay tribute to those that have fought and died for our country.

It's a great time to visit. Many of the hotels have special discount prices, many locals go out of town so it's not so crowded, Fleet week is going on so there are some beautiful ships docked that you can usually tour and the weather is generally very good. The stores also have Memorial day sales. ;)

Memorial Day began as a day for decorating the graves of soldiers who died in the Civil War (1861-1865), and thus the old name was 'Decoration Day". It is now officially the day for commemorating all those who died fighting for the country (living veterans are commemorated on Veterans Day -- November 11) Usually, the President presides at a solemn ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery, and government facilities fly their flags at half-staff until noon. The generally oblivious population of the US, however, makes no attempt to honor its war dead on this day, but instead considers it an occasion for shopping, picnics, barbecues, and a surprising amount of drunk driving.

Considering its solemn meaning, I have always been particularly offended by such things as sales advertisements that say "Happy Memorial Day from Toyota" (or Suzuki, or Mazda, or ....)
