What Cuomo proposed was actually the easiest way to connect LGA with a subway. Approaching from the Astoria line would require the condemnation of houses and serious tunneling under the runway at 82nd St. Approaching from the south meant going through a dense area of apartment buildings in a historic district. Approaching from the east was the only alternative. Ideally, it would be nice to have the LIRR go directly to LGA with a dedicated shuttle to Penn and the new Grand Central. At present, this line runs only twice an hour and takes about 20 mins. There would have to be a rail loop around Citi Field through the Willets Point Blvd. area where new buildings are already going up. The whole seems a bit hopeless.
