skylark diner edison, nj

I was highly anticipating a new restaurant in Edison as we have very few that make the grade...Well Skylark stays on the bottom as with most of Edisons restaurants.

Let me start with the positives: It is a new and hip kind of diner/restaurant with new and different items on the menu. It is kinda retro looking which has a DJ at night. The bar area is cute and inviting. The diner side is also appealing to the eye. However this is where it ends.

I went with my mom and was seated at a table for two. Normally these tables are quite small and I accept that. However our table had a bottle of water in the middle(which you could buy) 2 water glasses plus two wine glasses. Come on! this is a high end diner not a upscale restaurant. Get rid of the wine glasses already.

Okay, 10 minutes goes by with no server. I ask an employee to please ask our server to come to our table. She comes promptly with a nice apology. Okay I'm happy. I order a coors lite & my mom a coffee. 10 minutes later she comes back telling me they have no coors on draft. I reply with just give me any lite beer. 5 minutes later I receive a green beer. I was told it was left over from St. Patrick's Day....

I really don't want it but don't want to wait another 10 minutes so I accept it. My mom does not get milk with her coffee so once again, I have to track the server down.

Mom orders a turkey club, me a burger. I asked for med-well, I got a hockey puck, but my mom on the other hand got bacon that wasn't cooked on her club sandwich.

It gets better. There are no blinds or curtains at all in the entire establishment so if you are one of the lucky ones who is in direct view of the sun you are in trouble. Of course this was my seat and it was so blinding that we physically had to move to another table. Of course 15 minutes later the gentleman next to me asked to be moved for the same reason

Suffice to say this experience was horrible.

I will wait a few months and try the place again as I believe they are going through growing pains.

As for right now, I would not suggest going there at all.

When you do not have time to wait, you may want to try this wonderful Hometown Buffet across Rt 1 from this diner. The manager well dress even came to serve and pick up your dirty dishes when the waitress were too busy to catch in time ...

So, I give them $20 bill as tips ...

Another much better one is Grand Shanghai Restaurant down the road at 700 Route 1 North, Edison, NJ. 732 819-8830.

I just had the dinner tonight at this great restaurant; this dishes were great and the service was wonderful. This restaurant's decoration is like 3* restaurant, but the price is like a dinner...

No wonder the largest NJ newspaper, The Star-Ledger, gave it a 3* rating...

I've had much better experiences at Skylark. I've been there at least 5 times...in fact we enjoy the food so much we actually had New Year's Eve dinner there...

And again, the food was fantastic and very reasonable...for a price of $34 to $49 (depending on choice of entree) you got a choice of Skylark martini (a doublesize Cosmo or other similar cocktail, reg.. $7.50), choice of entree, we ea had the cold seafood platter and ended up ordering more oysters a la carte (6 for $9--great deal for PEIs), a lovely salad, entree and a huge and excellent dessert. My only complaint on the night was the lightning speed of our server. We arrived 10 min. early for our 8pm reservation and had bread, water, drinks, appetizer and she was trying to serve our salads by 8:20. I finally had to tell her to SLOW it down...at the rate we were going, the 4 of us would have been out of there by 8:45. Ridiculous! But once we got the pacing down (it may say "Diner" in the name, but I've waited longer for a midnight order of cheese fries with Gravy!), everything was fine...

We went back a few days later for our daughter's 13th b-day and had another great meal...with leftovers for the next day. The regular menu is extensive and in the $8 (for sandwich or burger) to $22 range (for filet) This time the service was perfect.

Based on atmosphere, value and food, I rate this one 3.5 out of 4 stars. In fact, I think we'll go tonight!

My husband, son & I went to the Skylark once again, to see if our first experience was an exception, rather than the rule. This second time was our last. We were seated in an area that had a draft, so we asked for a different table. That done, our server appeared & asked for a beverage order. So far, so good. We were not ready to order our principal dish, so we placed an order for "starters."Shortly afterwards, the server took our order for the main dish. She did not show up after that for a long time & we could've used some refills on the beverages. Tracking her down was difficult. As for the food, presentation is nice, but the quality is just not there. Our calamari appetizer was not at all appetizing; our main dishes were just ok. All in all, not a place for us to return to.

I ate here a month or so ago, The place is over priced and just not worth it even f you have one of those Restaurant.com vouchers for $25 or $50.

Food and service is avg at best service,

Would not go back again if I was footing the bill

This diner's food is average and service is below average. Make sure you check that your dinnerware is clean! The floors, tables and countertops may appear clean. But that doesn't matter if the plate holding your food isn't!
