Jackson Lake Lodge as base for the Tetons and Yellowstone?

We are planning our first family trip to visit The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, as well as maybe a day in Jackson Hole. We are unable to stay in Yellowstone due to late planning and no reservations available in July. Instead of staying in West Yellowstone, would it be reasonable to stay at Jackson Lake Lodge at The Tetons as a base? Or is this too far to make trips to Yellowstone? Would it be closer to stay in West Yellowstone?

I replied on the WY forum. Just FYI Jackson Hole is the entire area (hole is a trapper term for valley) and Jackson is the town. Names are so similar and confusing out there!
