What's the best route from Idaho Falls in mid-December?

Hi there

I'm planning to visit North Yellowstone from 14-17 December, travelling northwards from Idaho Falls. I'm a little confused if I can travel using route 20 then route 89 as I'm not sure if that part of route 89 will be closed.

Appreciate any advice what's the best route to drive during that time to Emigrant.

Thanks!

You need to check the weather closely before you do this drive and do not attempt it if a storm is moving thru. If there is a storm coming thru you need to stay put in a hotel until it clears. Do not follow GPS/SatNav routings if it tries to take you off a main, paved road or onto a road that is marked Closed.

US 20 actually routes thru Yellowstone and closes on Nov 2 for the winter. From Idaho Falls you can take US 20 to West Yellowstone where you will follow US 191 North toward Bozeman then look for the signs routing you to I90. Take I90 East to Livingston where you will exit onto US89 and take this south to Emigrant and Yellowstone.

You do realize with the exception of the road from Mammoth to Cooke City that Yellowstone is closed to wheeled vehicles that time of year?

Thank you D0bby for your advice on which route to take.

We did some research and understand there will be road closures and we will be mindful and check in the weather closely prior to taking the route.

cheers

Here are some websites for the state Road Departments. They will post daily road reports giving the road conditions in winter starting around the 1st of November. I would start looking at them about mid-November just to get used to what information they post and the terminology they use. Take a look at the webcams as well as they will show real-time pictures of the road conditions.

Montana:

The last couple of winters I also got good information, believe it or not, by following the National Weather Service FaceBook pages. My local one posted frequently as winter weather contributed to declining road conditions. These links will cover your drive from Idaho Falls to the Paradise Valley.
