Day Trip to Orleans

Thinking of taking a day trip to Orleans on Sunday. what are some of the stops or sites I should visit? Additionally, if we want to get a bite to eat in the afternoon any suggestions (Yardarm?) Someone told me there is a great wine and cheese shop down there?

Thanks for your assistance.

For dining notice the recent post from Harvey D and the replies....for Orleans. There should be enough to see in Orleans from shopping 'downtown' to viewing/strolling the beach in East Orleans at Nauset and/or Skaket on the Bay at low tide. But, if not, you can park in downtown Chatham just south of Orleans and visit some of the endless shops that line Main St. before driving over to the beach under the lighthouse for that spectacular view. Have fun.

The Yardarm and the Land 'Ho are two, year 'round "watering holes" that are unpretentious and frequented by locals. Another is Joe's at the Barley Neck Inn in East Orleans. We like all three so take your pick. Yes, there is a lovely gourmet wine and cheese shop in the center of town. This Saturday they have a special event highlighting a French linen company while you sip their wine. Sounds like fun but you will miss it if you arrive on Sunday. Tree's place, at the under-construction-junction of Rt 6A & Rt 28, and the Addison Gallery on Rt 28 are both lovely art galleries in town. Stop in at the Hot Chocolate Sparrow for a sweet and/or coffee in the afternoon.

You could easily drive 10 minutes north to Eastham to visit the National Seashore's Fort Hill Area, take a lovely gentle walk and some pictures of the panoramic view of Nauset Marsh, Coast Guard Beach and the Atlantic. The architecture, with 3 historic homes (one of them is the Penniman House) and rolling Then continue a bit further up Rt 6 to the Salt Pond Visitor's Center of the National Seashore where you can view some short films, visit the museum and book store and get a sense of how special the protected area from Eastham to Provincetown really is.
