How to find Grjótagjá Cave!!

Hi! I'm going to Iceland on October, and I would like to visit Grjótagjá Cave in Iceland. I couldn't find any travel agency to take me to there, and I really want to visit. I read some blogs telling that you need to "hunt" the cave.

I'll rent a car, 2WD. Anybody can explain me how to find Grjótagjá Cave? GPS directions? I'm not planning to explore the cave, just go to the thermal springs inside.... Is it safe and easy to find?

Advices, please!! TKS!!!

There's no "cave" other than the hot spring pool :)

It's there on road 860. I'd come in from the north, from the Nr 1 National Road (I remember it being a shorter drive from there.

Hi Mcollani - I saw your post and wondered if you had any success finding the cave and if you have any advice on how to find it?

Cheers, M

It's very easy to find. Search for Grjótagjá in google maps and you'll see it. There's a sign on the ring road (hwy 1) as you head west to Reykjalid (turn south on 860) or you can turn east on 860 from 848 on the east side of the lake. Road 860 is a half circle connecting hwy 1 and the road on the east side of the lake. Once you're on 860 you can't miss it. There's a little parking lot and the cave is right there, with signs about it. The cave is not very big, so not much to explore and the signs warn about the water temperature possibly being too hot. When we were there in July we spent 15 minutes looking around and no one was in the water. It's not a BIG attraction and unless you just sit inside for a long time, there's not much to do there.

You are not allowed to bathe in Grjótagjá, it's a private property.

We did a super jeep tour from Akureyri to Lake Myvatn and the surrounding area in March and the driver took us here. It wasn't on the itinerary but given the popularity of Game of Thrones, I would imagine it is covered on several itineraries (or you could ask your driver to make a detour!). I would not recommend driving to it in the winter unless you have a 4WD and are used to driving in Icelandic conditions.
