Possible stolen money :-(

Hello

We have been in Aitutaki for 4 days now and on day 3 we noticed we had $600 missing from our travel wallet, we didn’t want to place blame as our money has been in the room safe but after recounting and double checking the amount we decided to check again this morning and another $200 has gone missing within a day!

What’s the best way to report this as $800 is a large amount to just go missing! We are going to speak with the resort owners but I’m guessing it will more than likely be a police matter. Should we report in Aitutaki or Rarotonga as we are running out of time due to being out all day today and leave tomorrow morning.

Kia Orana Bzonce, welcome to the Aitutaki forum.

You need to report the matter to the Aitutaki police asap. No good waiting until you return to Raro, because you are delaying the process. Besides, Aitutaki police know who the likely suspects are on their home island. And you won't be able to file an insurance claim, unless you can provide a police report.

I recognise that today is Saturday, and the police office in Arutanga could be closed. Ask your accommodator how you can contact Sgt Henry on the after hours number.

As a precaution you do need to speak to the resort owner/manager. Sounds like they need to beef up their system. And to prevent another occurence of room theft.

Kia manuia.

Thank you we advised the owner who contacted the police to come take a statement and details.

Now just have to wait and it’s unfortunate we have to just take the $800 loss.

Also anyone else FYI you have to pay $30 to get a police report
