Do you mean you prefer room attached or private onsen?
Of course Onsen! I was recommended Yamada Bessou by a friend in Beppu.
Do both Ryokan and hotel. When in Japan I think you should at least do one to experience what a Ryokan is like. The personal touch of the owner of the Ryokan is something you will never experience in a hotel. I'm writing this from the Yudanaka Onsen Shimaya where we have just arrived.
I really like the superb customer service I experienced so far in Japan. That's why I think you can't miss by booking a Ryokan.
