Guided tour or hire a 4x4

Hi everyone, we are going to visit the Falklands for a week in February 2025, my husband is interested in the history of the islands during the war, and I would like to see the King Penguins. Would we be better hiring a 4x4, we live in a remote place ourselves so used to this kind of driving, or taking a guide. We are going to the Galapagos after this, so is it worth travelling to other Islands, or should we just explore the main island? Thank you in advance

Hi

I would always recommend seeing the smaller islands or West Falkland. Most of the main war sites are on East Falkland (eg, the final battles around Stanley, Goose Green and the landing beaches at San Carlos Water), but there are significant sites near Port Howard, Pebble Island, etc.

A lot might depend on whether you have a particular interest in a specific battle or unit that fought in the war.

Although I agree hiring a 4x4 would give you more flexibility, I'd strongly recommend using a guide at times to get the most out of your trip. Most of them are experts, and will know exactly where to go. The ground there is very difficult to navigate on due to it being mostly open grassland. So, trying to finding a battle position or a memorial can be like looking for the proverbial needle.

I have known senior military veterans use local guides to help them retrace their steps.

The main King Penguin colony is at Volunteer Point, about 2-3 hours drive from Stanley, on mostly off road track. You'll need a guide. Hire cars are not usually allowed of-road.

Hope this helps

Also at San Carlos is the British cemetery, which is well worth visiting. It is a few yards from where British troops came ashore.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I lived there for over 6 years, and tried to explore most military sites. However, the good guides often had first hand experience of the war.

Hi, I just had a look at the list of guides on the Tourist Board site, and it looks like a few I know have retired.

But you can search on the site for those that do Battlefield tours, or wildlife tours etc.

Kidney Cove tours is based just outside of Stanley. Adrian and Lisa Lowe can often show you 5 species of penguin on their farm.

Derek Petterson is the Warden at Volunteer Point (penguin colony, very scenic beach).

Estancia Tours has a long record of various tours and their Estancia Farm was used as a forward base by British troops in 1982.

It might be worth contacting the Tourist Board for current specialists.

One important point. It's worth checking which days a cruise ship or two is in Stanley harbour. A ship with 3,000 passengers can book up every guide months in advance. And wonderful places like Volunteer Point can be very different if you are there on your own or with several hundred day trippers.
