Camping

Hi

Hoping to go in October / Nov and will be staying in Stanley - just wondering if any kind of camping is allowed for a night? On a beach? Tumbledown etc?

Thanks in advance!

1. Re: Camping

Hi,

Apart from a couple of miles around Stanley, all land is privately owned, and owner's permission must be obtained before walking, driving or camping on their land.

However, if you are sensible, do no damage or leave litter, most owners will allow access.

Near Stanley, there are several attractive beaches and dune areas. I'm not aware of who you would ask. Possibly the Department of Environment (might be part of Natural Resources - the names change from time to time.). Parts are a National Nature Reserve.

You could probably camp without problem if you are discreet, and don't disturb the penguins! . I know people that would take a campervan there for a few days for a change of scenery.

Your main issue will be wind. This week, a large ship was blown onto a beach, so tents need to be very strong. Do not be tempted to shelter in or near shipping containers - these can move in strong winds. So, check the weather forecasts locally, and frequently.
