Car rental

Planning to go to Jogyakarta and tour around on our own. Is it safe to rent a car and drive on your own. Is it easy to get around.

Or is it better to get a taxi or tour guide.

It is much convenient to hire a vehicle with driver - not necessarily a guide. You could hire them for full day, half day or trip basis. Your hotel will help you to find a driver. Not sure if the rent a car option is available, even if it is available you will not save much.

Shasha59: As above, definitely have a taxi or car/driver to take you around. Depending on where you want to go, you can face some pretty bad traffic and parking/watch your belongings type difficulties.

Taxi is a different thing than a tour guide. If a metered taxi they only go exactly where you say to go, they do not suggest interesting sights or stops (except for shopping perhaps). A guide does not drive.

shasha59, hi

If you have an experience with driving in Indonesia, have knowledge of local traffic organization, road maps, signage and have a valid licence - no problem. The official tourism portal of JOG has a list of rental services:

Yogyes.com

Note: Google maps and GPS are completely unreliable in Indonesian cities and can easily put into trouble.

Hi there

Taxy meter is yes , not discussed things .

But some kind taxy like uber or airport taxy is kind of person that you are able to discus with and surely cause they no meter on, you can negotiate the price before you go.

In some regular tour agency in Yogya (Prawirotaman / sosrowijayan area) , they do rent car and you better negotiate too.

Salam
